The West African Examination Council says it will create special centres for albinos in this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination.

Its Public Affairs Officer, Mr. Demianus Ojijeogu, who confirmed this to our correspondent on Thursday, added that the council might allow candidates whose state governments have yet to clear their pupils registration fees to sit for the examination.

According to him, the council will provide the right lighting and ventilation in the centres.

Albinism is an inherited disorder in persons with complete or partial absence of melanin, a substance responsible for the hair and skin colour in humans.

Ojijeogu explained that target was to protect them from prejudices and discriminations.

He said, “The initiative is as a result of the forward-looking approach of the council. We were not pressurised to do it. Schools are still uploading the registration form of their pupils right now and we have made provision on the form for the candidates to indicate any physical challenge. We have been making provision for blind candidates to use Braille and once we have candidates with albinism, we will make provision of a special centre for them.

“I cannot say how many centres we will have across the states because registration is still ongoing. But once we have candidates from a state indicating that he or she is an albino, we shall make special provision for them. Their centres will have the right ventilation and lighting to make sure they are not discriminated against.”

This is a very progressive idea with one eye on the future of these already challenged albino youth.
