Defeating Boko Haram Will Be A Long Fight – US by ozoigbondu: 2:50pm On Feb 21, 2016
The United States government has said the fight against Boko Haram insurgents will be a long fight.

It therefore called on academics and think tanks to assist in resolving the Boko Haram crisis by finding out the underlying causes of the insurgency.

Speaking recently at the Capitol Visitor Centre, US House of Representatives in Washington, the US Assistant Secretary, Bureau of African Affairs, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said the ongoing battle against the terrorist group would require perseverance and huge resources.

“We need academics to help us understand the underlying conditions that led to Boko Haram. We need think tanks to identify creative solutions. We need the business community to help bring investments in the region and to create jobs and spur greater economic development in the affected areas. We need our ambassadors. We need our African ambassadors based here in Washington to advocate for more resources in the fight against Boko Haram, and greater cooperation among the Lake Chad Basin countries.

“This will be a long fight that requires perseverance, and it is going to require strong resources. We all know the stakes are high. We know what the stakes are. But now is the time — now is the time for us to work together with our African partners to redouble our efforts to defeat Boko Haram and create the bright future — and it’s a bright future that all of the people of Africa deserve. But I would say in this case, particularly, a bright future for the people of northern Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin,” the US official said.

According to Thomas-Greenfield, there is hardly any protest whenever people are killed in Nigeria and other countries in Africa.

She noted that in the US people protest human rights violations but that “there’s rarely a protest every single day when we hear that Boko Haram is killing people.”

“The outcry in Nigeria and internationally over the killings of the Chibok school girls was impressive – but it was slow. We waited to hear what people would say. Those protests, once they started, helped greatly to raise awareness of Boko Haram’s brutality. But they were only a start. We must say something,” she said.

America should start brainstorming on how to defeat ND militants too. The news on front page today proves the future is bleak for Nigeria.

Lets see how many wars Buhari can fight at the same time.

Our uncle has defeated them nah! The latest killing was not a bokoharam attack nah, it was just a move to embarrass the government. So which bokoharam is the US talking about? Or do you believe a dying horse can kick for that long?

I thought it was religion before but the most important thing is education because with education you can be able to read and understand things in a broader view.

The North is still not receptive to education. More nerds to be done

Thank you very much US government for speaking the truth.

On this thread, www.nairaland.com/2946623/tompolo-boys-defy-buhari-vows#43108378

Many Nairalanders that doesn't really know the difference between left and right have been comparing militancy with insurgency/Terrorism.

I've told them 1000 Tompolo would be very easy to defeat than terrorists.

USA, Britain, France, Russia, Spain, Germany have all been hit directly or through proxy by terrorists and till date, they've all been unable to completely kill Taliban, Alqaeda, Isis and alshabab etc.

Thinking it would now be easy for Nigeria to defeat Boko Haram, must be a fake dream.

The difference is that, terrorists don't really have anything to lose, neither do they really have lives. They're just fighting for no particular courses and they're ready to die, without fearing the consequences.

The ND militants on the other hand are more of lazy criminals and opportunists who only care about what to eat. Give them food and they'll shut up forever, just as they've been since 2009. Yar adua Shut them up, same way Sani Abacha did by killing the gentleman man Ken Saro Wiwa

Why can't Tompolo come out?

Since the militancy started in ND, how many people have they killed apart from kidnappings and collecting ransom? Whereas Boko Haram have killed more people to date than all the Militants have joint together. Boko Haram should now be second to Isis cos they're operating in 3 different countries.

So please stop comparing sleep and death.

We need another strategy to win this battle.

Take for instance, you found yourself at a bus stop crowded, how would you identify a terrorist in the , whose mission is to detonate a bomb? A very honest person should speak out?

What if you work in an organisation of over 100 people and one of the staff has been brainwashed to detonate a bomb, tell me how you would know.

Terrorism is so so dangerous

We do not need academics . No one is happy in Nigeria the difference is access to weapons. Those in the North got better access after the fall of Gaddafi coupled wit their disgruntlement . Many others would do the same if they had guns

This is the same Americans that refused to fully help Nigeria fight Boko Haram. The reality is they only cared once Boko Haram proclaimed their allegiance to ISIS.

Useless America, why are you always interested in Nigeria's business? Did you helped us by selling weapons for the war on terror? NO

Kindly leave us alone. Even our dullard President is super clueless.

The best way to defeat boko haram and other islamic terror organisations is to expose the ideology behind it(islam) for the fraud that it is. The real problem is the quoran, hadiths and the sunnah of mohamed which are the bedrock of islamic terrorism. To defeat islamic terrorism, you must defeat and expose the ideology(islam) behind it.
