Ekiti is FFO, for food only.
No amenities. Myopic people only thinking of their stomach like Esau.
If you see how people hustle for water in Ado a Ekiti, you will be surprised.
Funny enough, government officials are living in luxury, and the masses are in penury.
Even, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, who they say is even a pastor, has borehole in his house at Oke-ila, Ado Ekiti, but wouldn't even allow people to fetch water in his house.
All they do is throw some bread, rice, chicken to the masses once in awhile, the way we throw banana to monkey, and they will be dancing
That's what you get when your priority is just to fill your stomach.

I believe this report 100%. Yes they have toilets (major towns only) but they don't use them. Almost every bush path has faeces decorating them like flowers. The principal of a school at Ikole-Ekiti told me that no true son of Ekiti prefers a modern toilet to defecating in the bush because of the freedom and cool breeze.

Maybe not all...but an average Ekiti man equates open defecation to orgásm cheesy
. Go siidown! Which kind report? Make dem try Ondo, Kogi, Benue and OSUN. Hahahaha! The principal must be suffering from Psychological neurosis. #ayam a true son of the land and I don't do such and my entire community.

How did they carry out their study? I've spent over 20 years of my entire life time in ekiti and I'm proud to say this study does not in anyway represents the true picture here in the state.
I cannot remember the last time I saw a house without toilet, yea most of the toilets are pit latrines especially in the small towns but that they don't toilets at all? nothing can be father from truth than this

Am sure someone is trying to tarnish the image of the state possibly for political reasons. This can't be true

I'm not surprised. After stomach infrastructure without toilet infrastructure, the next thing is open defecation! Fayose, rather than pay attention to the infrastructure needs of Ekiti, is obsessed with Buhari!! At the rate he is going, he will end up seeing Buhari in his dreams. Fayose is a minus to Ekiti, period!!!

Investigation shows 80% of primary schools in
Enugu North have no toilet facilities
By Emmanuel Uzodinma
DailyPost investigation has revealed that over
eighty percent of public primary schools in Enugu
North Senatorial zone lacks toilet facilities.
The teachers and the pupils in the affected schools
said they had become used to defecating in the
bush,in what they refer to as “bush method”.
The schools affected are those in Udenu, Igbo-Eze
North, Igbo-Eze South, Igbo-Etiti, Nsukka and Uzo-
Uwani local government areas.
It was observed that apart from few schools in
these local government capitals, most of the rural
schools have no toilet.
Mr. Pius Ezema, who said he has been a primary
school teacher for the past 25 years lamented that
government was not showing much interest in
public primary schools.
The primary school head said the non-provision of
toilet facilities was just one of the myriads of
challenges facing the schools.
“The issue of non-provision of toilet facilities has
become part of the public school system in this
part of the country. It is not even being regarded
as a priority at all. So, over the years, we have
become accustomed to using the bush, where it is
available.
“However, I am not saying that it is something that
should continue because most times these pupils
could be attacked by snakes or other dangerous
things inside there in the bush. You should not
forget that some of them don’t even have sandals,
so they go into these bushes on bare foot.
“On the part of the teachers, it is equally a
shameful thing that somebody like me rushes into
the bush to answer ‘the call of nature’, but it is
something one cannot avoid”, he lamented.
For another head teacher in Uzo-Uwani Local
Government Area of the state, “the important thing
government should do is to start providing us with
subvention for running our schools.
“What I receive as termly subvention from the
government is N600 (six hundred naira). It may
sound as a joke but that is the truth . Some
schools receive N900, that is the highest. So,
primary school heads in Enugu state run schools
with their salary.
“I recall that last year, the government told us that
we shall be receiving N25,000 as subvention, but
one year after, no school in Enugu State has
received that money. Yet, they barred us from
collecting any form of levy from pupils.
“You can see why I told you that even though we
are not happy over the non provision of toilet
facilities, it is just one of the many problems we
have. We can’t continue to buy chalks, registers,
and maintain schools with our meagre salary”.
Although efforts were made to reach the
supervisory councillors for education and the
information officers in the affected areas, they were
evasive.
However, the supervisory councillor for education
in Nsukka Council Area, Mr. Byron Ezugwu said
teachers should equally be blamed for the lack of
toilet facilities in primary schools.
“What you should know is that even in some
places where these facilities are available, the
teachers convert them to stores. In some other
places, the facilities are abandoned after they have
been messed up”, he said.
Asked why the government has not taken radical
measures to change the situation, he said: “neither
the local education authority nor a head teacher
has written to my office about the situation. They
are always talking about desks, tables and things
like that. The government on its own part has been
responding to those requests” .
“Also, in places we renovated in primary schools,
we also ensured that toilet facilities were provided”,
Ezugwu added.

laidian:
Ekiti State is believed to have the highest of persons who openly defecate in Nigeria About 1.8 million residents of the state out of a total population of 2.7 million is believed to engage in the menace.

In her presentation, a Community-led Total Sanitation (CLTS) facilitator and a staff of Rural Water Sanitation Agency in the state, Mrs. Lanre Ayeni, said 748 million of the global population, lack access to hygienic water supply.

She added it was so regrettable that 1.8 billion people still use contaminated sources of water, which she said has caused a lot of damage to their health and body systems.

“When you take a water that has contaminated by cheat (faeces), the person will have ten million viruses, one million bacteria and one hundred thousand parasite eggs in her body system.

“Advocacy for open defecation free in Ekiti and good water sanitation is yielding results. Enforcement in the past by CLTS coordinators had failed, what we now use is persuasion and people are gradually changing their perception about this concept.”

Mohsena, who disclosed that several achievements have been recorded through UNICEF/EU WASH programme in Ekiti, using Gbonyin and Ekiti West as pilot councils in advocacy for open defecation Free and WASH, said the two international organisations have been funding the programme and rendering technical supports.

“In Ekiti, an estimated number of 180,000 people are gaining access to good source of water through provision of hand pump boreholes. In the same way, 29,582 people in Ekiti have gained access to safe water through rehabilitation of 65 hand pumps in Gbonyin. 965 pupils from four schools now have access to child and gender friendly water supply.

“We have also bring improvement to 250 towns and communities in ODF by providing ten toilets per public. We have also provided technical supports in 313 communities, for them to know various ways to build and take ownership of low cost latrines and how to repair them in case of damage.

“Stakeholders would continue to step up sensitisation and advocacy in rural areas on the need to key into the total eradication of open defecation, to forestall breakout of diseases.”

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and European Union (EU) have lamented that over 2.5 billion people lack access to improved sanitation globally, out of which one billion were engaging in open defecation.

They said these at the weekend during a two-day media networking and alliance building workshop on organised by European Union/UNICEF on Water Sanitation and Hygiene and Open Defecation Free campaign held at Ijero Ekiti, Ijero Local Government area of Ekiti State.

The UNICEF/EU delegation, led by Mohsena Islam, a WASH specialist from UNICEF, went on a field trip with Ekiti Media WASH group to Asasa and Temidire Olojofi farm settlements in Aramoko Ekiti, to assess compliance with the campaign against open defecation. CLTS Coordinator in Gbonyin, Mr. Kayode Eleso, said many residents have been arrested and prosecuted for engaged in open defecation, particularly in Ado Ekiti metropolis, while efforts, he said, were also on to compel every household to have their toilets.

He regretted that low manpower in the sector was responsible for the noticeable inefficiency of his officers , saying records show that no staff has been recruited since Ekiti was created on October 1, 1996.”

Shocker: Nigerian University where students
defecate in the open
ON December 27, 201412:23 AM/IN Education /
Comments
Dr Ugoji Ebujo
Widespread anomie prevalent in Nigeria,
occasioned by a virtual dilapidation of the societal
ethical and moral framework, has literally
squelched any social appetite for comparative
sociological analysis of any segment of the
Nigerian society and a corresponding segment of
any foreign country even if that country is Somalia
.
Any such study invariably ends as an exercise in
rendition of woes, lamentations and pity. Our
country once mighty have fallen and is falling. The
decay is systemic and deep-seated and
widespread .
Our political system is heavily infected by
corruption and the educational system is
strangulated by poor funding. But our education
suffers from much more. Teachers groan and
moan, deride politicians and claim moral
indignation but they are equally culpable for the rot
that has beset us.
The university of Ghana and the University of
Nigeria have so much in common besides being
named after their respective countries. They were
both conceived during the colonial era and they
have main campuses located on hills, Legon and
Nsukka . Both have very large student population
of between 35000 and 38000. They have regional
reputations and have produced high quality
graduates who have played great roles in their
societies.
A brief stay in each university last year afforded
me an opportunity to reflect on the two societies
through those institutions . In Legon, it was an
experience of efficiency, culture and aesthetics. All
buildings were painted and all were white and all
had red roofs and all windows black.
Flowers and hedges were manicured and trees
added beauty to the environment. Order was
evident and everything showed agelessness
because the new and the old abided by a laid
down code. The library was quaint but noiseless,
lacked modern books but had good ambience.
The hostels showed they have not lacked care and
the newer ones were quite modern. But whether
old or new , modern or ancient the colour codes
were maintained and all the roofs were red. The
Guest house was sparsely furnished but functional
and had good landscaping . Order and serenity
were evident. The internet wifi system was good.
Nsukka was a different experience. A multitude of
Uncompleted projects littered everywhere, grasses
had
Turned to bushes and hedges were untrammeled,
free and wild. Many buildings were pale, washed
and battered. Hostels were in shambles .The Enugu
campus that houses faculties of Law and Medicine
has no pipe borne water. The state of the toilet
facilities in Enugu campus can only be imagined. A
chat with some female students of that campus
revealed that students have buckets for defecating.
They defecate in the open, along the toilet
corridor, many at a time, facing themselves, into
buckets and hurl the contents afterward into the
toilet Bowls, leaving trails of feces for the cleaners
who come when they wish to effect as much
cleaning as they can. The buckets are
subsequently rinsed with scarce water ,which they
have to buy , and kept in the rooms until when
again needed. Those who cannot stand the bucket
idea defecate into polythene bags and fling them
onto a heap behind the hostels.
That heap has survived generations . Its pathetic.
An Alumni exists but the atrocity has persisted.
The Vice chancellors residence is state of the art,
new. The vice chancellor has managed to
ensconce himself in five star comfort while
students are dehumanized . Dont ask me who is
being groomed there. Perhaps pit toilets , since
they cannot have water, may actually restore some
dignity.
Its that bad. Students learning early how to be
wild. The school’s internet network system
functions so abysmally slowly that I could not use
it . Lecturers and students can hardly do
meaningful online researches in that remote
location. A senior lecturer told me she sends
articles to foreign journals using her blackberry
phone. That is the story of Nigeria .
And ironically the school’s motto reads: To restore
the dignity of man. Ghanas 2015 budget is 50
percent donor funded, Nigeria is rich and lives on
her own money. Legon is to a great extent
insulated from political and local administrative
changes because Legon has a tradition.
A tradition that all must follow. That entrenched
tradition is the institution. So while projects in
Legon are completed before others are started, and
buildings are repainted yearly, Nsukka is a picture
of haphazardness and planlessness. An
environment of order and good tradition will
culture , nurture and instill order and virtue in
young minds but if you sow disorder , you will
reap disorder.
Often Nigerian academics sneer at the politicians
claiming they are superficial, flimsy, selfish,
shortsighted and wasteful. But Nsukka indicts Our
academics. And Its not just about funding. And
Nsukka is not alone ,other public universities are
perhaps worse. Nsukka is a reflection of our
society .University of Ghana indicts all of us. And
we shamelessly now troop there in droves in
search of better tertiary education for our children.
