Dear NairaLanders; I have an interview scheduled for 1st week of march. I really want to attend because I think the job has a wider range of opportunity to offer.

What to I tell my current employer? Where do I tell him am going to? What are the "scopes" being used for things like this?

Call in sick. I have done this severally and the last one I did got me a memo (query) and it was actually the one that gave me a new job.

I just love to dare ni oo, call in sick, even my phone sometimes will be on, I will just ignore any call that day, or you just off the network and not the phone itself.

It depends on the type of organisation, if its a top notch organisation you can simply apply for a sick leave.

But for the start ups, I remember what I used to do back then, early in the morning my MD would get this text from me;

"Good morning ma'am, please I'm sorry I can't make it to work this morning, I woke up with serious stomach upset, but as soon as I get strong enough I would rush down to the office."

The goal of telling your boss you would come to work once you are ok is to make your boss less offended because there is still a possibility of you coming to work and you didn't just abruptly decide not to come to work, so if the interview is in the same town you can still make it to work after the interview, and if you can't come back on time it would be taken the "illness" turned out to be too serious

Bad advice. Never give yr present place of work hint that you intend leaving them. They will do everything to block your star.

Ok here goes:
i. pretend to be so sick a day before the interview that they ask you to close early so the next day you naturlly don't have to come to work
ii. certificate pick deadline from your uni if u have not submitted one already as part of documentation
iii. some dead "close" relative who can die as many time as you need an excuse
iv. simply disappear and reappear with a sorry tale the day after; kidnap, robbery etc....

This makes me remember the lies I told during the two times I changed jobs.

The first one, my colleagues knew about it and simply covered for me by saying I had to run some urgent bank errands. They were actually the ones that came up with that excuse and of course I came back by 2pm as if nothing happened . I was so grateful to them for that....and yup I got the job.

A year later I had to change jobs again to one I had always wanted. No way I was gonna miss the interview . So I simply started acting sick two days before the day... on the third day I simply calledin to say I'd be gling to the hospital first, so everyonetook me serious as I was already showing signs of it the previous day.

Yup, I got the job too.


Those two worked for me. Others may just simply tell the truth and get away with it. It all dependson your relationship with the person you're working with. If you haven't exhausted your leave days, you can also use that. Some companies allow for casual leave also.

It depends on your relationship with your employer.

Some wont want you to leave, while some are absolutely ok with you exploring better advantages.
