The Cuban Ambassador to Nigeria, Carlos Sosa, has stated that most Cuban are descendants of the Yoruba race in Nigeria.

He spoke while hosting Enitan Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife, at the embassy of the Republic of Cuba in Abuja.

“‎Ooni is the Spiritual father of most of us Cubans all over the world because 90 percent of Cubans are black Africans and a very large portion of us originated from Yorubaland which is spiritually headed by Ooni of Ife,” said Mr. Sosa.

Mr. Sosa said the Cubans originated from Ile-Ife, a town they call their ancestral home and which they cannot wish away.

The High Commissioner spoke of the tourism potentials of Nigeria, particularly in Ile Ife, describing the ancient town as home to numerous tourist attractions, which he said if developed to international standards, would help Nigeria economically.

Sour in that it reminds us all once again of the massive atrocities of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade and its devastating effect on African populations in the form of loss in Country-building power which led to the societal and economic retrogression of a group as advanced as the Yorubas, as well as what our people went through in the Americas.

Sweet news in the Sense that is shows how resilient Yoruba culture can be, even in the face of all adversities, and the fact that there is a growing bond between Africa and the African diaspora.

The Alaafin of Oyo (The biggest warring empire) at the time, and the oni of Ife (Spiritual leader of the Yoruba race) should issue a joint apology to the African diaspora to start the official mending of ties, even if it has begun unofficially.
