Hello Jodina - I do empathise with you regarding your concern at your Sisters condition. I am not a Doctor, but i will try to give you some advise regarding nutrition that may help. Epilepsy is an incredibly complex neurological condition that has varied causes, and should not be seen as a single disorder, but rather as a group of syndromes with vastly divergent symptoms, but all involving episodes of abnormal electrical activity in the brain. It can controlled with medication, although surgery may be considered in difficult cases. It is very rarely cured. There are various risk factors that can bring on seizure, and its important to be aware of them - Missed medication Lack of sleep Illness (both with and without fever) Severe psychological stress Heavy alcohol use Medicinal contraindication regarding over-the-counter/prescription medications. These can decrease the efficiency of her of seizure medications Nutritional deficiencies: vitamins and minerals The menstrual cycle From a nutritional point of view, a Ketogenic Diet has been show to help Epilepsy sufferers reduce the number of seizure they have. Basically, its a high fat, medium protein, low carb diet. It works by stimulating the body to produce "ketones", and induces "ketosis" in the body. The effects of ketosis are similar to the metabolic effect of starvation - as there are very low carbs in the diet. The ketones in the bloodstream then serve, through a very little understood mechanism, to reduce the number of seizures. The diet was first developed in the early 1900s, and has been successfully used for the treatment of seizures. I hope this helps. |

Thank God you have been to the hospital. we dont need to live on drugs but our body is designed to function on food nutrients. The drug is to give immediate attention to all emergency cases but is not the lasting solution to all the ailments. If we eat the right food our body can heal itself. It is unfortunate that the food we have around us are grown or produced with chemicals which render them harmful to the body or our organs. There are some Dietary supplement products that are from Forever living products(owner of Alovera of America. USA with offices in Nigeria) that can help your sister to overcome her problem .These products have worked wonders in the life of people. They are not drugs but food/nutritional supplements which will nourish the body system from brain to function as expected. For more details and how to buy them contact me on orelusimodupe@yahoo.com or 08032451201 |

will like to know more about the ketogenic dietIt is very easy to achieve a Ketogenic diet. All you have to do is restrict the intakes of any carbohydrate or Sugars(inc Fruit sugars) to an absolute minimum, or cut out completely. Increase the consumption of Proteins and Fats in the diet to compensate for the loss of calories from the carbs, and to maintain any bodily repair functions. It is similar to the Atkins diet, but not the same. If you can get hold of an oil called MCT Oil (Medium Chain Triglyceride), then do so. The oil contains medium chain triglycerides that have been shown be more ketogenic than normal dietary fats. If not, then dietary fats will suffice. Fasting(No food, only water), once a while , also helps, so she can try this as well Another poster mentioned Urinotheraphy - This is basically the consumption and utilisation of your own urine to treat various ailments and illnesses. It may sound disgusting, but it has been shown to work and improve a variety of conditions and ailments. It is based on the notion that the human body contains all it need to repair, regenerate and rejuvenate itself. Contrary to general belief, Urine is NOT a waste product, but a product of blood filtration through the kidneys. It simply consists of stuff the body has no need for at the time. Consequently it is rich in vitamin, minerals and trace elements. E.g, if you consume a lot of vitamin C in one day, the excess is removed by the kidneys from the blood, and passed into the urine, still in a viable form. It is recommended you use the first urine of the morning, and take it mid stream, so as to clear out any bacteria that may be in the Urethra. A cup can be sipped throughout the day,or drunk at once. It is better to start with a little at a time to avoid any reaction from gut. Your Cuz can try this for a month and see what happens. She has nothing to lose. |

THE PRODUCTS FOR SEIZURE/ EPILEPSY ARE AS FOLLOWS: 1) Aloe vera gel liquid drink 2) Ginkgo plus tablets 3) Garlic/Thyme tablets 4) Bee pollen tablets 5)Aloe blossom tea All these are not drugs but food supplement (in liquid and tablet form) from FOREVER LIVING PRODUCTS LTD from USA with offices in Nigeria and many countries. They are not found in supermarkets, Retail shops or pharmacy shops but you can buy directly from the company or from their distributors like me. Even if you are buying from the company, the distributor has to introduce you to them to enable the company to pay commission to the person for introducing a customer to them. The advantage to the buyer is that he will buy at the control price which is far lesser than the distributor,s price. |

Hi Jodina For you to even start seeking advise on this forum, buffles me. I really sympathise with you coz is shows you are very desperate to get some help for your sister. You need to seek help ferom professionals (specialists), not any doctor like a GP. Seizures come in different forms and the medication also differs. She needs to go for brain scans and all that for the doctor to determine whats kind of seizure she suffer from, then they take it from there. If there jis no improvement from the doc attending to her now, ypu try other doctors. Please do not look for advise from Nairaland "Doctors". All what they are telling you is hogwash. If your family can afford try coming down here in Mzansi (south Africa). We have excellent doctors. Good luck |

When I first saw this thread I could nt bring myself to contribute, simply because am in tears even as i type. All the same,I ll give u the little info i know about dat disease. Its the single most difficult condition i ve witnessed. I lived with a sufferer for over 23yrs. The whole family was in constant tears all the while. Theres nothing we did nt try. Some people recommend urine here. Sis,as demeaning as taking ones unrine could be,i tell u what,it did not work for my uncle's fits. I pray God it works for ur sis though. I personally took my guy to huge christain gatherings,to God be d glory it was nt his opportunity to be healed. He was on some seroius medications. Some costing over 6k,at first d fits reduced. But shockingly, even while he was on drugs, after sometime,he experienced unprecented and hugely nauseating fits.My verdict, the drugs,in d long run,did more harm than good. All forms of native, just name the city and i tell u all the native docs made some cool pays over 23yrs while my man was suffering. My advice. Give ur sis all d love and support. Although i got to know of the usefulness of ground nutmeg mixed with honey (maybe it relates to the katogenic stuff dat someone mentioned here, i dont know) but we never got to try it out with my uncle. Ultimately, there is nothing God cannot do.While u experiment with all the help and tips u get, believe God will intervene. The sufferers never wished to have it but, they just find demselves in it. Like i said, show love and understanding to ur sis, My own uncle is gone. His going was made most painful by the way he did. I wish u and ur sis better luck in finding a cure. Goodluck. |

Treatment Overview Treatment can reduce or prevent seizures in most people who have epilepsy, which can improve the quality of your life. Controlling your epilepsy also lowers the risk of falling and other complications that can happen when you have a seizure. First your doctor will determine what type of epilepsy and what kinds of seizures you have. Treatment that controls one kind of seizure may have no effect on other kinds. Your doctor will also consider your age, health, and lifestyle when planning your treatment. It may take time for you and your doctor to find the right combination, schedule, and dosage of medicines to manage your epilepsy. The goal is to prevent seizures while causing as few unwanted side effects as possible. With the help of your doctor, you can weigh the benefits of a particular treatment against its drawbacks, including side effects, health risks, and cost. After you and your doctor figure out the most effective treatment for you, it is important that you follow your treatment exactly as prescribed. Initial treatment Initial treatment for epilepsy depends on the severity, frequency, and type of seizures and whether a cause for your condition has been identified. Medicine is the first and most common approach. Antiepileptic medicines do not cure epilepsy, but they help prevent seizures in well over half of the people who take them. 1 Medicines that may be used first to treat epileptic seizures include: Carbamazepine (Tegretol, Carbatrol). Ethosuximide (Zarontin), for absence seizures only. Topiramate (Topamax). Oxcarbazepine (Trileptal). Phenytoin (Dilantin, Phenytek) or fosphenytoin (Cerebyx). Valproic acid or divalproex sodium (Depakene, Depakote). Phenobarbital (Luminal Sodium, Solfoton). Phenobarbital is a first-lineOngoing treatment If epileptic seizures continue even though you are being treated, additional or other antiepileptic medicines may be tried, including: Felbamate (Felbatol). Gabapentin (Neurontin). Lamotrigine (Lamictal). Levetiracetam (Keppra). Tiagabine (Gabitril). Topiramate (Topamax). Zonisamide (Zonegran). Benzodiazepines (for example, Diastat, Tranxene, Valium). Phenobarbital (Luminal Sodium, Solfoton). Phenobarbital is a first-line medicine for newborns. Primidone (Mysoline). The body converts primidone into phenobarbital. Pregabalin (Lyrica). This medicine is intended to be used along with other antiseizure medicine. Lacosamide (Vimpat). This medicine can be used along with other antiseizure medicine to treat partial seizures. Rufinamide (Banzel). This medicine can be used along with other antiseizure medicine to treat seizures |

pls let a specialist investigate the origin(brain scans) and pinpoint the triggers that set off the seizures.nutrition goes a long way too. Knowing the triggers is very important as it helps reduce the occurrence and manage it better.the drugs do work and the sufferer will be gradually weaned from the drug depending on the investigation carried out abt the causes of the seizures. Somebody says it cannot be cured, that is a total lie cos i have a cuz that have not had a seizure in almost 10 yrs now.yeah its unbelievable bt i guess God has a hand in it. 1 Like |

No,although theres ongoing research, stimulating certain parts of the brain so to cease seizures. For the moment I think drug therapy is the best way to go,your neurologist or family physician would be the one to ask. And try going to www.epilepsy.com. That community would be a big help. |
