The people of Ghana have celebrated the end of British colonial rule and the birth of a new nation every 6th of March since 1957. Ghana is the first Independent Country of the black race in Africa.
Independence Day could be fun for you no matter where you live in Ghana or abroad, but the celebration will at its peak in the nation Capital. Independence Square (Black Star Square), Accra is definitely the most patriotic place in Ghana to celebrate Independence Day.
From spectacular Musical performances, Military parades, there’s more than enough fun to occupy your Independence Celebration. Here are 5 things to do in Accra on Independence Day

Experience the traditional Ghana Independence Day parade, which features a variety of marching bands from all over Ghana, the police, the military, School children, Worker and special units of the armed forces are not left out. The center stage of the Independence celebration for the nation is the Black star square . The square is home to monuments such as the Independence Arch, the Black Star Gate, the Soldier memorial statue and the Liberation Day Monument. The independence monuments stand is near the spot where members of ex-servicemen’s union were shot while on the way to petition the British Governor in 1948.
The history of Ghana is incomplete with the story of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. The Kwame Nkrumah memorial park is a testament to life of Ghana’s founding leader and hero. Located on the old polo grounds to the west of Accra metropolitan Assembly. The memorial park is made up of the mausoleum and a small museum. The Mausoleum is the resting place of Ghana’s hero. The museum is home to the Dr Kwame’s Car and other personal items, especially letters.
The National Theater, home of the National Dance Company, the National Theatre players and the National symphony Orchestra. Visit the National Theater on Independence day to enjoy fun packed programmes by national and international artists with Independence themed programmes. Located in the near the Independence Avenue the theater itself is a work of art with the feature of a gigantic ship.
Visit the Artists Alliance Gallery for trip down memory lane with a collection of political satires. The Artists Alliance Gallery also showcases Ashanti drums, masks, traditional crafts and contemporary Ghanaian art. The Alliance Artist Gallery exhibits the work of some of Ghana’s renowned artists, such as George Hughes and Owusu Ankomah.
Taking a stroll on the sands of Labadi beach wouldn’t make you, the least patriotic Ghanaian. Take a moment to reminisce about the sacrifices made by the Country’s founding fathers. Ensure you show some gratitude by being happy and having some fun. Labadi beach (La Pleasure) is a one of Ghana’s busiest beaches; it is maintained by the beach hotels around.
