Palpable fear has enveloped the monitoring unit of the Oyo State Police Command as the investigating police officer (IPO) in charge of the murder case leveled against the detained strongman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Lateef Akinsola (aka Tokyo), slumped in office and died.

Gboyega Kareem, 45, was said to have reported at the office on Monday hail and healthy only to slump around 12noon while discussing with another police officer in front of the monitoring office, inside the Police Headquarters, Eleyele.
He was said to have given up the ghost before he could be attended to at the command’s clinic where he was rushed to for medical attention.

The incident has sent shock into other officers of the unit as they feared that his sudden death may not be unconnected with the Tokyo’s case he was handling.
“He was not sick. In fact, we were all in the office chatting and discussion when he stepped outside to give O/C his newspapers when he suddenly slumped. We tried to rush him to the hospital but he died before he could be attended to,” one of the bereaved officers told Daily Sun.

A native of Kwara State, Kareem was said to have been relatively new as he joined the police force in 2004. His wife and children were said to be residing in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State.
When Daily Sun made efforts to talk to other colleagues of Kareem who used to accompany him to the court since Tokyo’s trial, with four others, commenced about three weeks ago, cries of bereaved women were overheard in the background while the call was not picked.

Efforts to get the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Miss Olabisi Okuwobi, to confirm the incident also proved abortive as her mobile phones were, unusually, not accessible.
Tokyo was arrested June 6, 2009 over gunmen invasion of the home of his estranged deputy, Alhaji Lateef Salako (aka Elewe-Omo), who is now the chairman of the NURTW in the state. Elewe-Omo’s two security aides were killed during the attack while his two children sustained gunshot injuries.

On June 23, Tokyo, along with four others, were brought to court on a six count charge of murder and conspiracy. At the resumed sitting of the court on the case on July 9, the five accused persons were asked to be remanded in police custody by the presiding judge, Magistrate A. S. Bolaji.
