A popular saying by Joseph de Maistre says 'every nation gets the government it deserves' and this is true most times. Nigeria too, is not an exception. Every time a Nigerian blames the leadership we have for the problems we have, it sound true but it's only half true.

The other half is that Nigeria has bad leaders because many Nigerians (maybe most) are bad people. We said military was bad for us that democracy would be better but democracy has not worked and the standard of living is deteriorating. There are some things that are black and white but when people start to talk about grey and cream, then you have to suspect foul play.

When a Nigerian politician take any evil action, you find some people defending him/her, some even go to the extent of showing public solidarity through protests. Are those people good people? Don't they deserve the bad leadership they have? If someone collects five thousand Naira to vote for a party, doesn't he deserve the bad leadership?

Despite the economic downturn in Nigeria, the national assembly sanctioned 330 million naira to buy 10 vehicles for the Senate president, Bukola Saraki and the excuse? There present vehicles were having faults. Wait, are machines supposed to be faultless? The national assembly has also planned to use 4.7 billion naira to procure vehicles for its members.

Yet some people who are average Nigerians will stand up and defend it. They'll say the Senate has always done that. They'll say if they were they will do worse. They will say it's their turn, let them enjoy it, our turn is coming. Bad news? Your turn will probably not come. What's the probability that you'll be a Nigerian senator? 3/population of your state. A governor? 1/population of your state. A president? 1/170 million. And before we even say jack, some have turned it to comedy because they're experts in suffering and smiling.

We can't all be there but we can choose people that will be there. Most of us will do our normal jobs, which are important to the growth of the nation, but are we going to get the deserved pay for the worth of our work? For Nigeria to be good, an average Nigerian has to be good, has to look at the long term consequences of his actions, has to stop worshipping politicians and has to stop complaining about the state of the nation but do nothing about it when he has the opportunity.

One thing is sure, when an average Nigerian is good, we will have good leaders, because bad people can never choose good leaders.
