The benefits of inter-cultural marriage outweighs it limitations. Before I continue, let us sit back and take a sip of ice cold water.
In Nigeria today, marital beliefs are gradually changing as more people are more educated and enlightened. This is the reason a would-be brides and grooms would met and fell in love in the city without the customary search party who are concerned specialists in “hunting” for wives for their sons due for marriage. Today a good percentage of young people are chosen people of different ethnicity and are venturing into inter-cultural marriages. Many of such young men and women now have the listening ears of their parents and kindred more than ever before in this rapidly changing societies.


Factors that encourages inter-cultural marriages

A number of factors such as education, migration and religion are responsible for encouraging inter-cultural marriages.

Education is the biggest tool that has really encouraged inter-cultural marriages. It has provided a suitable ground for inter-cultural marriage to flourish. Schools as an important cen­ter of socialization outside its primary func­tions of inculcating knowledge, has made people to understand themselves better due to the social interac­tions between them. Most educated people tend to have broadminded approach to dealing with people and issues. This trend has broadened the minds of would be spouses that searching for marital partners should be based on tolerance, love and compatibility and not ethnicity or culture.

Also, as people move from rural to urban areas in search of better living, education and other en­gagements, they live in big cities where they share work environment, residential areas with people from diverse ethnic back­grounds, by so doing there are high chances that people from different ethnic groups and religion may find true com­panionship and love among themselves.

Advantages of inter-cultural marriage

The benefit of inter-cultural marriages cannot be over emphasized. It is a galvanizing tool in bridging the gaps in our nation. Inter- cultural marriages has greatly influenced globalization, where people of different backgrounds, cultures and religions are living together, and where the world has become multicultural and full of diversity, establishing tolerance and harmony has become very crucial and important, and fostering mutual love and affection has become vital. Without tolerance and harmony the lasting peace of societies cannot be maintained, and loyalty for each other cannot be established.

Inter- cultural marriage help to build up love. Where love does not exist, then the spirit of sacrifice cannot be formed. Unless a person loves another he can never have good feelings in his heart towards him, and he cannot faithfully fulfill the rights due to that person.

Lack of tolerance leads to fighting, violence, and finally it destroys the peace and security of society. When people fail in their arguments they become intolerant, and then they use force and aggression to support their point of view.

In conclusion the debate about inter-cultural marriage is an issue in which nobody wins and nobody loses. I may be crucified for my position here. But the truth is that if we claim to be refined and modern then our orientation must change. The unity of our dear nation should be paramount in everyone’s mind; to achieve this, inter-cultural marriages have to be encouraged. The benefit is enormous!!!
