This is my boy rocky, he has a temperament issue. It has gotten to the stage where on sensing a strange person or object, he cuts the chain and on some occasion jump past a 6ft+ fence just to attack. I'I've been thinking of what to do to it and top of my mind is disposing it. I need advice on taming his temperament issues. ..

The dog needs socialization. Youtube video of Cesar Millan, Zack George etc can help out. 2 Likes |

Talking about the devil, it was raining today, I let it out of its chain to move around the house while we stay indoors. 1hr later, noises outside the gate, rushed out to check.. The dog has jumped through the fence to bite a girl. I'm at the hospital as I write this. Smh |

andysnoopy:That's serious... Hope the girl wasn't seriously hurt.I think you might have to let the dog go before you get some serious liability on your hands. BTW it's possible to get it under control through training and socialisation... If u have the time required to achieve that. 1 Like |

andysnoopy: Hello andysnoopy. From what I can make out of your post, it's not so much an inherent temperament issue but more of an acquired problem from the way you raised the dog, ie keeping it chained up. Keeping dogs chained up is very bad for them. It's the fastest way to make a dog aggressive, and by aggressive I mean uncontrollably. Being chained up brings on a lot of stress, anxiety, agitation, the occasional fear, helplessness and frustration on the dog. You end up with a dog with a lot of pent up energy and absolutely no outlet for this energy, which in turn is manifested as aggression. Most would advise that you get a stronger chain. I would say discontinue the chain thing entirely and build a proper kennel for the dog. Besides, it is a mastiff and I doubt if there's any chain that could withstand the dog's brute strength for very long. The dog is also no longer a wee pup so I sincerely doubt if socialization would really serve any purpose now other than to put people within even easier reach for the dog to attack. Walking it daily would help reduce the pent up energy but if you would do this, I would advise you do so when there are few people on the streets / roads to minimize any possibility of the dog attacking pedestrians. Also, you need to do something urgently about your fence as it is obvious that it cannot contain the dog within your premises. And do this quickly before you end up with a police case on your hands. Another option; you could let go of the dog and sell it off or give to someone with a lot experience with aggressive dogs and who also has a very secure compound where the dog cannot scale the fence. Lastly and the most extreme option for you would be to have the dog put down. This would be the most likely advice you would get if you were in the US, UK or SA as the dog is clearly a disaster waiting to happen. 1 Like |

Wow it was funny at the hospital today. I shed tears but thankfully my dog was released back to me by the police. It was almost shot to death and even the locals were saying I put some juju on the dog. Smh. . Africa and our metality. I'm living in Ghana and as a Nigerian, our every movement is scrutinised. After paying for the girls treatment, I was with her family when 6 of the neighbourhood resident stormed the hospital with policemen, their accusation was I'm a ritualist and my dog is offering me protection and blood. I could not belive it! It was like a joke.. The dog is mean quite alright but it was a loving dog during its puppy period and was so close to me that till date it walks into my apartment whenever it wants until people starts coming in. I have one neighbour and the man ( a Ghanian ) is the reason why the dog is still there.there . He loves it so much and care more for it than i do. You dare not enter the compound without a company even if u have a car.. and today my neighbour was the reason the dog is still alive. It's not aggressive to my neighbour and his family and my gf recently visited and 1 week to her visit, she's became best of friends with it. The dog is only aggressive to outsiders but the aggression is too much. The other day my next building neighbour's children were playing football and the ball flew into my compound, the dog just bursted the ball at that instant. My friend dare not leave their shoes outside because it will tear them to pieces. So that's y it's always on the leach. Thanks to my neighbour I was able to keep it but how long will I keep having problems with the police?? The girl's parents are good people and the bite wasn't a deep one, it would have been trouble. Thanks for the advises, I will follow suit.. and if it doesn't work.. then I will poison it... |

the best solution would be to build a proper kennel for him,not from wood though but a concrete one with metal bars and please please please stop Chaining the dog. |

andysnoopy: You got off easy with the police and your neighbourhood folks and that is a good thing. You'd best do something verery quickly to get things under control with Rocky now because you and / or him may not be so lucky next time. |
