There isn't a doubt that a tire blowout ranks the highest on any highway driver’s list of fears. With good reason, as a tire burst could lead to a complete loss of car control. With SUVs and MUVs, there is the possibility of a flip-over, too. A blowout is dangerous no matter how good a driver you are or how safe your car is. Since the unfortunate death of Nigeria's minister of state for labour due to an accident occasioned by a tyre blowout, here are some safety tips on how to handle burst tires. 1.) Start with maintaining a safe driving speed; there are just no two sides to this. The lower your speed, the higher your chance of survival. A blowout at 80–90 km/h will be far less dramatic than one at 140–150 km/h. Indeed, if you survive a tire burst at 150 km/h, consider it a gift of God. 2.) Do not slam on the brake pedal. Of course, this is easier said than done, as our brains are hardwired to instinctively jam the brake pedal in an emergency. Hard braking is actually the worst thing you can do as it will further imbalance the vehicle and throw it out of control. 3.) Don’t abruptly take your foot off the accelerator. Do it slowly and gradually. The deceleration force from a blown tire is so strong that your car will anyway slow down rapidly. If you have engaged cruise control, be sure to disengage it immediately. why so many noise about the burning topic ''what to do if your tyres have a blow out on highway'' when the topic '' how to avoid tyre burst'' is equally more important and is not giving same priority. Incidence of tyre burst can be reduced to barest minimum if we can adhere to this practice below: 1.Avoid patronising expire and tokunbo tyres 2.Stop overinflating your tyre :Most car owners are left to the mercy of their illiterate vulcanizer for expert advice on amount of psi of pressure that should be inside their tyre and end up with 40+ psi pressure . When you are speeding on highway on hot afternoon with such bulged tyre ,definitely the psi inside the tyre will expand and increase to a point of blow out due to temperature increase . whereas all this has been factored in the design of the tyre by the manufacturers which is why recommended tyre psi is mostly between 33-35 psi So let give more emphasis on best tyre safety standard |
