Actually u can do them for both after selling eggs for 1.5 years to 2 years that's when old age begins setting off in birds so I dispose off as meat most especially during the festive periods for maximum profits that's for layers.

Some farmers are into both individually and are making profit, but their choice is always inspired by experience which you dont have yet...

Here is what I think and I think it can guide you to ultimately make a choice.

Birds for meat
Those who are into this year round are either seasoned farmers who supply to fast food/retailers/consumers or seasonal farmers who only stock their farms for the festive periods (Xmas and Easter).
Farming for meat is only very profitable during these periods when birds are sold for as much as 3k per bird and it is not so capital intensive compared to farming for eggs since you harvest within 8-12 weeks and get your money back in bulk.
ON THE OTHER HAND

Birds for eggs
With the right knowledge, anyone can farm for eggs all year round because market for eggs is not seasonal like market for meat, once your birds start laying, sales start immediately and it is always hard to meet the demands of buyers no matter how big your farm is.

Though egg farming is capital intensive because you would have to feed the birds till they start laying which takes up to 5 months, but in the larger picture it is more profitable than meat farming because once your birds start laying, you have a money mill on your hands for the next 4-5 months.

A farm of 1500 birds has the capacity to give you eggs worth 40K daily, such as sweet thing really.

Finally my advice to you is, which ever one you finally decide to start with, i suggest you seek out someone who is into the business and gain practical knowledge, then start small, gain experience and confidence then grow into it.

Goodluck.

40k daily on 1500 birds isn't realistic bro.

U people should stop killing animals. Why must u have a poultry when those animals should be living in the bush and dying when their time comes. We need animal control agency in Nigeria
Re: Poultry Farming, For Meat Or For Egg? by habsydiamond(m): 9:37pm On Mar 08, 2016
I think its beta you rear for eggs because u will make money on daily basis but for meat you will wait for months. Even when the layers are done laying u can still sell dem for meats which makes it more profitable.

op poultry is lucrative provided management of the birds is ok & no issue of disease outbreak or extreme mortality. For earlier ROI, go for broilers. Though you get daily income when your birds start laying, but d daily funds isn't your profit. You first remove feeding cost, medication cost if any, then at month end pay your staff. Before you begin to say celebrate, remember cost of investment in cages. My advice, get a good plan or feasibility done & also 1500 birds cannot make you 40k daily. At 85% production rate, that is 1275 eggs daily= 42.5 crates daily, even at N700 i.e. 29750 daily without removing the cost mentioned above,i mean feeding etc. Note: not every birds or farmers attain that production rate. Another advice, if you are buying POL , buy from reputable source or you might hate ever doing poultry Biz, All the best

I am a poultry farmer. I see excelsiorfaem farm give the best advise here. If i were you, I will steer clear off meat production. On paper, meat production makes a lot of profit, but in reality it doesn't. Smuggling of poultry meat via land borders has killed off the potential. Marketing your final product is a major headache. Even with the so called renewed strict stance of Nigerian costums. Smuggled chicken still make their way to main markets
Egg production makes more sense if you get it right. For a starter of this business, point of lay is good if you can guarrantee your source. If you get birds from wrong source. You will regret venturing into this business. Point of lay will guarrantee you start making money pretty early in the day unlike spending on the venture for between 18-21 weeks without any income. Raising your birds from day old chicks is more cost effective but delicate for an inexperienced farmer. It should be noted that raising livestock is very scientific than just meet the eye. If chicks get bad foundation, they never do well in life. Vaccination should be strickly adhered to in rearing period and first 3 weeks of their lives needs extra level of care.
For good production birds (85% and above) there is a rough calculation of making N6 profit per total birds per day. This profit is just based on running cost. But excludes the initial cost of building and cages. Initial startup cost is very expensive. But very profitable venture on the long run.

I have space available for establishing a Poultry farm somewhere in Sango Ota.

Capacity could be between 1000 and 5000 birds and we could sell up to 100k worth of eggs weekly.

Anybody interested in investing could quote me or just contact me through my profile.

Thank you.

Good day everyone.

I recently want to go into agro business (poultry farming) for the sole purpose of making profits and by God's grace, I have a sizable capital.

The question now is, do I go into poultry farming for meat production or do I go into poultry farming for egg production?

I want the one that's more profitable that's why I need the advice from experienced people here.

I await your contributions.

We help poultry farmers with recipes that enhance the growth of their poultry animals to attain desired weight in the market thereby cutting down on cost of feeding their animals for too long. The good part of it is that the recipe can work for All types of birds be it "Broilers, Cockrels, Turkeys, Ducks, Geese" , Pigs & Cattles. Interested persons should send me a PM.. we bet you, you won't want to go back to the old way of farming after tasting this. NB:- Please only serious minded persons should send me a PM thanks. andersonpally@gmail.com
