No nation progresses beyond the quality of its civil service. In fact, a nation's civil service is a reflection of its values (and sometimes, its level of development). Great nations have well run, highly skilled, effective and professional public services. Poor nations have weak, low skilled, poorly managed but highly political public services.

All the talk of change will prove futile without a formidable civil service to help actualize the vision of the government of the day.

Going forward, what kind Civil Service does Nigeria really need?

One where:

- The ticket to your next pay or your fate on the job is what you add to the team and not where you come from or who you know.

- The Board is a real supervising board, and the management is steady and foreright, not a band of stooges, not rubber stamp lackeys of the DG or the Chief Executive.

- Workers would earn their salaries based on what they contribute to the system rather wait for some father Christmas to deliver to them their share of the national cake at the end of the month.

- No Governor, PM, DG or Chairman would pay N10million worth of salaries monthly but will not provide a mere N200,000 needed for logistics to get the work done and keep workers productive.

- Workers are exposed to conducive working environments, the right tools, training and re-training and an unwavering application of international best practices.

- Every worker in every government establishment has a clearly spelt out job description.

- Where every Naira made or spent is justified and accounted for.
