The album itself might’ve been a surprise but its success surely isn’t. Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Untitled Unamastered’ release debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 this week. Billboard reports that the album pushed 178 000 units in its first week, 142 000 of those being pure album sales. All of this with no prior promotion or pre- released singles. The out-of-nowhere effort features some demos taken from his ‘To love-vendor a Butterfly sessions’. It has proved to be just as good as the final cut because it’s earned K.Dot his second No. 1 in less than a year. When ‘TPAB’ dropped in March of 2015, it topped the Billboard 200 chart with 363 000 units sold (324 000 pure album sales) in its first week. Clearly this album’s opening week is small fry compared to the impact that ‘TPAB’ had but it’s worth celebrating. For a project that had no promotion to top the charts in the age of the Adels of this world who hang on to No. 1 for centuries, Kendrick has proven he is truly the "King Kunta".
