Hello adegbitetunji. We advise individuals to apply for their student visa several months before the start of their studies.

Thank you for the feedback

Hello Jamezy4u. Visa officers typically don't look at documents for non-immigrant visas, including F2s. If corroborating documents are required, we can put the case on hold and give the applicant an opportunity to send them into the embassy/consulate. I don't know what a weeding certificate is.

Jamezy4u:
Dear VO

1. As a student of F1 Visa in the States, you are married and it was a traditional marriage which off-course without any formal marriage certificate. You have a kid (son). If you want your wife to visit you while studying or even bring them (wife & Son) as dependents on F2 visa.
..How will you or your wife proof to the VO that you are actually married? For your son that bears your name might not be issue but for your wife that all her documents bear her Father's name, will her International passport maybe in your name be enough? How could one go around this safely and sincerely please?

2..If one must get a court weeding certificates, what exactly the nature/rank/name of courts that certificate issued by them are well recognized?

Thanks

Hello VO

I finished secondary school in 2010 and a lot happened, so I couldn't really further my education, but now, everything is good and fine, and I'm ready to go back to school, I'm 24, I took the SAT in January and I'm about to apply to a school in the US, would they have any issue with my age, And mostly with when I graduated from high school?
What are the likely questions I would be asked, and what are the necessary documents i should have?

Thank you so much, I look forward to being answered unequivocally... God bless

Hi Proppie. There are plenty of students in US schools who are older or even younger than typical ages for such programs. We can't answer for what your prospective schools will require, however, or what they will ask. When it comes time for the student visa, check back with us if you have any more questions.

Thank you very much for your response. When I was asking about whether or not my age and time frame between when I graduated from high school and now, which is 7 years, would be a problem, not with the school application, I actually was asking if at the embassy, they would ask me questions regarding that?
And what are the likely questions I'd face at the embassy, and likely documents I should have also?

Thanks a lot as I await further assistance

Hello Proppie -

You may be asked questions about many topics. In general, if something about your case is out of the "ordinary," you should expect to be questioned about it and be prepared to explain the cause.

I understand the VO don't talk about chances here... Does having a unused 3 visas on ur passport mean anything ?? does it make someone look on serious to the VOs or it has nothing to do with VO's interview evaluation.. Thanks

Hello sirRiddy,

Bank statements are NOT required for an F1 visa. You are welcome to bring those to the interview, but they will most likely not be requested from the officer.

Student Visa Team

Hello sir,

I recently got admission into a school in the United states for an F1 visa. I want to confirm if what you said above still holds when applying for an F1 visa.

Thanks.

It is odd to have three unused visas in a passport, but it's not an ineligibility. If questioned about it, be truthful. Do not attempt to remove the visas or alter them in any way.

Hello Fadman4real. Unless you are on full scholarship, you may need to demonstrate your ability to fund your education. Most people do this by providing a bank statement of their own account or whoever is paying the tuition and expenses.

Dear VO,

I want to apply for F1 visa interview. I was denied B1/B2 in 2013 based on act 214b. In the new form DS-160, after I have selected yes to previous denial, what reason do I state or I should pick 'Do not know'?

I await your prompt advice.

Thank you

If you know the reason, you should state it. If you do not know the reason, that is an acceptable answer.

Required are:

International passport
DS-160 confirmation page
SEVIS fee receipt
I-20

You also need to prove that you have the ability to pay for the entire first year of your program. No documents are 100% required for this, i.e. if we are convinced that you have the means without any documents, we are allowed to approve the visa. However, we do often ask for documents to prove that you have the means.

Hello LagosNIV,

I am currently in the US, this is my 3rd visit to the US and my stay expires end of January.
I am considering doing a program(community college or 4yr Uni) this coming Spring 2018. This is my 3rd visit to the US.
I read on the USCIS website and some schools have told me that it is possible to apply for a change of status within the US however it may take a while.
What do you advise I do? Stay 90days then apply for school, get an I20 and wait for "a while'' before I get a response from Immigration which runs a risk of not getting to me before January resumption meaning I would have to file for an extension of my current visa OR return to Nigeria and apply from there?

Thanks.

And mind you I go a misrepresentation from the Canadian embassy which lead to my refusal because of a YES OR NO issue. Does that still affect my chances of getting my America study permit.
Re: U.S. Student Visa (F1, M1, & J1) Forum - We're Listening by Nobody: 7:13pm On Oct 06, 2017
You can apply to the school you wish to attend any time they will allow you to, including while you are in the US, but I would advise that you return to Nigeria and apply for a new visa. Based on current USCIS processing times it would be very unlikely that an adjustment of status would be completed within the timeframe you are looking at.

Hello my people, this forum has been very helpful, may God bless us all

Plz on a quick note, bellow is my F1 visa experience, I need an advise of what I could do next cos I really want to do my msc either in US or Canada

I got an F1 visa for FALL semester 2016 admitted student into M.Sc. Computer science department at Wayne state, on two years duration which commenced on Aug.31st 2016.

I departed from Lagos airport on 28th of August to arrive Detroit on the 29th of August, with intent of resuming classes. On transit through Abu Dabhi Airport UAE to be cleared by Border protection officers (CBP), my documents were checked and questions were answered correctly, as I was about to proceed one of them demanded for my phone which was in my pocket, I handed the phone without no negative intent, he had access and said he saw a WhatsApp’s chat I had with two friends residing in New Jessy as par accommodation prizes and discussion on stay with a description of his residence.

At this point after much interrogation and several explanations, the truth was i just meant those guys of recent on Facebook after I secured my visa then we started getting along, they do not know much about me, but I only knew they were students. My intention was to pay a visit to New Jessy during my Exams holiday either have a stay with one of them or have a short stay accommodation, since they were students as well, for now the chat is not to be taking serious, this i told the CBP.

However, the Officer still did not believe I was a genuine student . So he cancelled my visa, even after I showed him my hostel reservation receipt and my school clearance pass to prove I was heading to school campus hostel reserved for me.

He gave me a form (voluntary admission withdraw on the ground of admissibility) to sign and if I refused to comply after 30 minutes he would take a decision that might bar me from entry US in the future, so I did and he advised I take the copy to the embassy for a re-application.

On arriving Lagos, the 3rd of September 2016, I mailed the school of the occurrence, I was advised to book emergency visa appointment, the school sent me a late arrival document to present at the embassy since the semester has commenced (31st of August).

I attended the interview on the Sept.7th but was refused as the officer checked their system, ask me about my phone chat and concluded “Sorry your application does not qualify for the kind of visa you are applying for”.

Finally, kindly advise on the possibilities of getting F1 visa again cos I really need to do my msc

My visa was canceled written " 22 CFR 41.122 (h) (3) cancelled" what does this code mean?

Plz advise.

Thanks and await your kind advise.

Regards

Thanks for the feedback @LagosNIV ! Do you have an idea of the current processing time for B2 to F1 COS for Nigerians within the US ? Also, what are my chances of getting the F1 in Nigeria considering I've been to the US thrice without any violations? I would be most grateful for your response. Thanks

Hello KashCafe -

The 2 parts of your questsion that I quoted are related. The code is a reference to section 41.122(h)(3) of volume 22 of the US Code of Federal Regulations. That section of the CFR relates to the cancellation of visas by officers at the port of entry after a traveler has voluntarily withdrawn their request for admission into the US. It was written to show that those were the circumstances under which your visa was cancelled. As to the rest of your question, we do not comment on individual applicants' chances here on Nairaland.

KashCafe:

Hello unluvablei -

I don't know the precise processing time. I only know that I recently interviewed an applicant who had attempted to do that, and then had to delay his admission and return to Nigeria to apply for a visa because it had not been processed in time for his planned start of classes. I don't recall exactly how many months in advance he had filed his application to adjust status. Suffice it to say, it was far longer than it takes to get an interview for a student visa.

Good day LagosNIV,

Advise taken! smiley

My fiancee is a greencardholder and we're thinking about getting married in court in the US. However he doesnt plan to file for me until he's a citizen. He lives and works as a doctor in Nigeria as well. He is thinking of a masters programme for fall 2018.
1) should i declare that I'm married even though i don't plan to change my name for my school admission
2)would being married to a greencard holder be a disadvantage
3) If I apply for F1 visa for January term and get it, would it be possible to defer until fall 2018? I know the school can...but what are the implications for the F1?

Hello Placeboeffect -

You will need to qualify as a credible student. After that you may be asked about your sponsor - if your sponsor can afford both costs then there should be no problem, but you must be able to speak to that.

So you really expect the VO to tell you the sort of questions him or his colleagues will ask you during the interview and answers?

Please don't abuse the opportunity we have to read directly from VOs that make out time to help here
