The tragedy here is that Buhari failed to realize at the time that his coup was simply opening the way for the looters to change from politicians wearing babariga to soldiers in khaki; what is worse, the scale of the looting committed by the worst of the soldiers would be enough to make the worst of the civilians look like amateurs.

The worst thing about the military dictatorships Buhari helped open the way for - even beyond their corruption - is that at least under civilians there was room for complaint, whereas the soldier-tyrants could simply lock up or execute their critics. Even a rigged election at least has the possibility of being challenged, which is more than one could say for the likes of Babangida (remember Dele Giwa?) or Abacha.

It isn't even as if the corruption of the Babangida and Abacha eras was something new to military rule. Gowon's era from 1970 to 1975 was also rife with bribery and thieving, which was why Murtala overthrew him in the first place. Buhari was around for the Gowon period, and yet he failed to draw the necessary lessons from a piece of history he personally lived through, just as he is currently refusing to draw any lessons from his attempts at "saving" the Naira back in 1984-85. The one thing that is clear about Buhari is that however "incorruptible" he may claim to be, he has a strong tendency to repeat the mistakes of the past, yet somehow expects the results to be better the second time around.

In any case, the moral of this story is that it doesn't matter how "honest" or "incorruptible" a soldier might claim to be: we now have enough history to realize that anyone who suggests a coup as the answer to Nigeria's problems needs his or head examined by a psychiatrist.
