The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has slammed the Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) over the comments it made on the attack on the Atlas Cove Jetty in Lagos.
The YCE after a meeting had criticized the attack, disclosing that it was scheduling a meeting with President Umaru Yar’Adua to discuss the latest development, which it said was an invitation to inter-tribal war.

MEND spokesman, Jomo Gbomo in an interview with Daily Sun said rather than criticize MEND for its action; the YCE should be apologizing to the militant organization and the Niger Delta over the actions of former President Olusegun Obasanjo in the region.

MEND stated that the Niger Delta problem might have started in oil rich region but since it was sired by injustice it knew boundaries.
It dismissed that its action could lead to a tribal war except there was a plan to start a war before the MEND action.

His words: “The YCE should be the ones apologizing to us after their son; Olusegun Obasanjo wiped out Odi with innocent civilians and stole our commonwealth as the Minister of Petroleum. They should apologize that while we do not have bridges to cross to our communities, the system has robbed Peter to pay Paul with bridges in their sacred region. The Niger Delta issue may have started in the Niger Delta, but the problem caused by injustice knows no boundaries. It is a Nigerian problem that should be enjoyed or suffered by all. Some say they are sympathetic with the struggle. While that could be true, it is only those that make sacrifices with us that are the genuine sympathizers.”

Gbomo described the comments of the Odua Peoples Congress (OPC) as ranting, noting that the MEND attack in Lagos was to reinforce its declaration that Nigeria’s oil installation would not find refuge anywhere.
“It seems some people just enjoy ranting. Is the OPC threatening to attack any Niger Deltan or a particular state or tribe there? We have the Itsekirs, Isokos, Urhobos, Ijaws, Ibibios, Igbos, Efiks, so who do they plan on attacking first?

Do they plan on attacking pipelines and oil companies and making our job easier or plan to destroy non-existent infrastructure? We just believe they are making a mountain out of a mole hill. We have made it clear that the oil industry will not find refuge anywhere in Nigeria as long as they are contributing to the injustice in the Delta and therefore anyone that shelters them should not expect the conflict not to come to them. We will however, focus on the oil industry and not on any other structures except in a full scale war scenario,” he said.

On the call by Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie that militants should not be paid, MEND said it supported the move as it would expose those who were in the struggle for monetary gains and those who were genuinely concerned about the problem of the Niger Delta, stressing, however, that it could backfire as criminals with guns could return it to collect money and buy new ones.

“The Archbishop may have his reasons. There are opponents and proponents to this offer. The money offer can separate those who have a vision and those who are in it for the short-term gain. This is helpful to us because there would have been no other way of finding out the committed fighters. The drawback here is that many fake militants who are criminals can now offer the weapons they have for cash and then buy new ones. It is a complex situation which only true federalism can solve,” he added.

MEND is signing its own death warrant. They should learn from Tamil Tiger in Sri Lanka. They forgot Lagos is a centre where national opinion is formed. They are depleting their most important asset "Reserve Fund of Goodwill" The Tamil Tiger orchestrated the assassination of Ghandi and depleted the popular support from the India populace, they were isolated and it was just a matter of time. This is the first lesson in Freedom/Revolutionary or Guerrilla warfare.

I choose to go the way of Tam David-West on this one. The Atlas Cove that was destroyed belongs to the Federal Government and not Lagos state or the 'Yoruba' people. The YCE and OPC are just trying to tribalize this thing now, which may result in inter-tribal conflict.
The reason MEND blew up that installation is because they want to cripple the oil supply in the country - and nothing else. Killing yoruba people was not their main intention.
I also agree that the response from Jomo Gbomo was uncalled for. His words made things worse.

I can now see why the Niger Delta people are suffering, they lack the correct ability to think, dialogue, discuss, hence they result into violence, they are no intelects, they are rouges, mama and papi waters, they have replaced intellectual thinking with the use of weaponry, they have replaced militancy with thugrey, destruction and arrant nonsence. In war, it is a different ball game, then it is not going to be fighting against an harmless installation, blowing up harmless installations, it will be an eye for an eye, a leg for a leg, they will find out that it is more than hiding and bombing a few installations and calling it militancy, they will know this is arm for arm - who born egberi when yoruba ifa, opele, sango, oya, ogun, opele and all the deities dey? Dem think say na by play by play?

It is another matter carrying AK 47s and it is another matter rendering it completely useless with the power of ifa- their guns will just be oozing out water instead of amunition, in short, they will simply be spoken to, commanded and they will begin to shoot each other, let him call it ranting now, but by the time the real thing happens, his head will be a platter for OPC to sit on- who born am? Im think say na joke? Let him go to ondo state and ask what happened in 1983 - seems he forgets too soon. I can see he is afraid already, but when OPC lands on his head, shits on it, he will forget the password to his email address.

Mr big sense and heavy grammar. Intellectual dialogue you said. I will presume its the sort Ken Saro Wiwa engaged without violence and look at where it got him.
OPC is another name for homeless street kids that has graduated into part time criminal with a godfather called Ganu Adam and Fesaheun. If Nigerian army couldn't wipe out MEND, so how is OPC with just Ijebu charm and cartapult going to manage.
When fela sang it years ago, we though he was joking, that there is a Yoruba name for them- SHAKARA OLOJE. They like to bark than bite. MEND did not announce their attack before hand and how is it that OPC kept announcing their imminent attack on MEND?
By the way how do you identify a MEND?

Either some of you're slow or just plain dumb because you're not making any sense.

Some of you idiots are so mindly polluted beyond sound and meaningful reasoning.

What do you want? More money? More oil to bunker? More money to take to babalawo to help get back your mojo? more money for your greedy leaders to go spend on mansions in London, France and America?

Weren't you guys dancing and jubilation when DSP Alamieyeseigha came back from england after geting ducked for stealing your money and saying the gov' was bleeping with your son of the soil unjustly? did mend blow up his house abi no be your money? what did you guys do to ibori and odili? did you and mend blow them up for diverting your money? Did you blow him up? Did you say thanks to the feds for getting back your money?

Assets whose worth is estimated at about N44,541,702,029.00, including a high brow hotel in Abuja, were yesterday handed over to the Bayelsa State government by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC). They were part of the loot recovered by the commission from former governor of the state, Chief DSP Alamieyeseigha, who was jailed for corrupt practices.

The recovered items include Chelsea Hotel located at the Central Area of Abuja, valued at over N2.8 billion in 2007, and another property located at No. 2, Marscibit Street, off Aminu Kano Crescent, Wuse II, Abuja, valued N210,000,000.

Other assets recovered from the former governor and sold include the ones worth N3,128,230,294.83 in Nigeria, $441,000 in the United States of America, 7,000 Euro and 2000 pounds across Europe.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony held within the premises of Chelsea Hotel, Abuja, EFCC Chairman, Mrs. Farida Waziri, said the return of the recovered assets was as a result of painstaking investigation and successful prosecution of the erstwhile governor for abuse of office, corruption and money laundering.

"This is a solemn occasion. There is indeed nothing to celebrate, rather, it is time for deep reflection. This is because the events that culminated in this ceremony today are rooted in serious and grave betrayal of public trust of a high ranking public officer, the governor of a state, Chief DSP Alamieyeseigha, former Governor of Bayelsa State. The assets, which we are returning today are as a result of painstaking investigation and successful prosecution of the erstwhile governor for abuse of office, corruption and money laundering. He was charged, tried, convicted and sentenced by the Federal High Court, Lagos in 2007 and assets worth billions of naira forfeited to the Bayelsa State Government.

Did you and mend go after Sam Edem Chairman Niger-Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for embezzling and spending 1 BILLION Naira/your money on rituals and babalawo to regain his manhood?

11% Of oil Nigeria's oil money goes to the delta region, that is no small change and have you asked your leaders what they did with all that money? I need you to answer the question gan sef? what happened to all the statury allocation money, the jara wey the government dey put on top every month and the 11% of naigeria's oil wealth? what bleeping happened?

what environmental and pollution laws have your leaders enacted and enforced. Do they care or give a shit?

You idiots are here getting excited because some ass holes killed innocent people in lagos to justify the shady and uncaring practices of their leaders.

The sad facts is, just like before, abuja is gonna send more money and resources to the region and it's gonna have to go through the thieves you call leaders and they're gonna do what they do best, STEAL every penny and your people are still gonna remain poor and in the dark. Keep fooling your self on the internet. Yoruba folks/lagosians are the least of your problems, your problem and salvation is right there in the delta because charity begins at home, clean up your house before running around like headless chicken and killing innocent people? MEND and your leaders are in the same cest pool with the idiots in Abuja and I wonder why they are all still alive and innocent atlas cove maigads are dead.

Clueless people.
