No fewer than 100 decomposed corpses at the Osun state Hospital, Asubiaro, Osogbo were, Tuesday, given mass burial due to the dangers odours emanating from them were causing to the health of the people in the state.

According to the state Commissoiner for Health, Mr. Lanre Afolabi , the remains were abandoned in the hospital by friends and families but pointed out that the decomposing bodies were also those of victims of accidents and robbery cases . He said the Government decided to give the mass burial due to the nature of the bodies which has decomposed.

It would be recalled that the premises of the Osun State Hospital, Osogbo, was , over the weekend, taken over by offensive odours following the decomposition of corpses at the hospital's mortuary.

As a result of the situation, palpable fear of epidemic gripped nurses, doctors, staff, patients and residents of the area when it dawned on them that an epidemic was looming in the area. Infact, workers in the hospital had threatened to stay away from work as from Monday if the ugly situation persists.

THISDAY gathered that the cooling system of the mortuary packed up as a result of power outage in the Asubiaro area of the state capital where the hospital is located. A staff who spoke with THISDAY on condition of anonymity disclosed that the hospital would require N250,000 to fix the faulty generator that caused the problems.

The situation in the hospital got worse on Friday when ante-natal patients who usually have their clinic on that day were forced to leave the hospital midway into their exercise when the stench became unbearable.
