Re: Y Most African Doesn't Like It When People Say They Look Like African! by ikamefa(f): 12:32am On Nov 15, 2006 |
@ candy A geisha is a traditional Japanese entertainer of men. She is a master of traditional arts including music, serving tea (which is a fine Japanese art), dancing and singing etc. don't confuse this with prostitution aight? you may call them super hostesses, geisha go through intense training learning only the traditional Japanese arts. Geisha are very respectable women in japan's society and would never routinely indulge in relationships with different men. if you appreciate all things Japanese the above would prolly mean something to yah! if not hey! to me what they go through, to become full geishas, their craft et all is beautiful |

I agree with you! It's not just about their outward beauty but also about their meticulous training - almost to perfection. Have you read 'Memoirs of a Geisha?'

Memoirs of a Geisha is a good book and movie however you cant help but say that instead of them being low class prostitutes, they are pretty much high class escorts with a lot of training Talk the scene in the movie where the star geisha had to go up her virginity to that nasty doctor man because he made her naja a higher sum of money than the other guy, Nudo, isnt that a kind of prostitution? albeit on a higher class scale |

Honestly I don't even know how I look. Poor me. The truth is my grandmother was from Ireland and my grandfather a Carib decesdant. So all of my siblings look completely different. There is one who looks caucasian, there are some who are darker. My complexion varies with the climatic conditions here. I cannot even send pictures to verify how I look because seeing me in person and in photos does no justice to truly indentifying me. I have been stopped many times on the street, college and elsewhere and asked if I were African, to which I would answer somewhat. If they ask for a clearer understanding then I tell them I was taught that My fore-parents were from Africa so therefore I must be African. Honestly I really don't care what people call me, afterall Africans are damn pretty. |

Re: Y Most African Doesn't Like It When People Say They Look Like African! by mrmetoo(m): 6:23am On Nov 18, 2006 |
I think ppl don't like being called Africans because of the way the media portrays us with all the flies and dirt and half naked "bush people". So when someone says u look African you might just think they're referring to that kind of image. There was one day I was with my friend and I said summ like "that guy looks naija" and she was like "aww thats not fair". I could not understand it at all because I didn't know when saying someone looking naija became an insult. |

it really depends on the context in which the question is asked, if someone is trying to be an @$$, i won't be nice in my reply but I seem to get comments on lookin african all the time, one day i was in library studying and this guy came up to me and was like are u african? I swear that was one of the most random, things and i was like ehh, yea well nigerian actually, but that was really an odd way to be approached, lol I look african, [nigerian, =D] and im proud, b/c thats what I am its my background, it identifies me, and I am pretty, pretty [lol if i do say so myself, ] so no problems there! =D |
Re: Y Most African Doesn't Like It When People Say They Look Like African! by adconline(m): 6:32am On Apr 25, 2007 |
I don’t think that people don’t like to be called Africans. But have you really sought for the underlying meaning of African from that person who identifies you as an African. Do you feel flattered when someone praises for speaking good English? Not for me because it means that the person had a lower expectation of me. The reason why I say this is because when they tell you that you don’t look African, they simply mean that your appearance does not conform to the images they see on TV period. Why do people assume that Africa as a continent looks alike. Its because they have a narrow and myopic definition of Africa. Someone even said to me that “African women are tacky" |

Well, i proudly call myself african everytime. but yes, u get ppl that think i am african american, but it is painful when another nigerian says i dont look nigerian, i always feel like sending them a round of slaps |
Re: Y Most African Doesn't Like It When People Say They Look Like African! by spoilt(f): 5:10am On Jan 15, 2008 |
I am african and proud to be so. People stop me and tell me "you must be african". I am really dark and slim. I represent my sisters well. One of my white client once told me he can sniff out an african girl from a line up of African American women. "They just look better" He insisted especially without makeup. I totally agree. because you dont want to see destiny's child without their weaves! |
