As the world marked tuberculosis day on the 24th March, 2016, with the theme: UNITE TO END TB. It will be health wise if we discuss some important facts relating to this disease that takes 4000 lives a day globally. Though the disease is preventable and curable, yet is claims a high death toll.

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease usually caused by Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, which most commonly affects other parts of the body.

It is spread through air or from person to person via droplets from the throat and lungs of people with the active respiratory.

SYMPTOMS OF TUBERCULOSIS
1. Coughing up blood
2. Fever
3. Chills
4. Night sweats
5. Shortness of breath
6. Loss of appetite
7. Weight Loss
8. Significant nail clubbing may also occur

TREATMENT:
Currently there is no effective TB vaccine. The standard TB medicines are more than 50 years old and require at least 6 months of use.

For latent tuberculosis, victims need to take just one type of TB drug.
For active TB, particularly if its a drug resistant, it will require several drugs at once.



A number of new drugs are being looked at as add-on therapy to the current drug-resistant combination treatment. It is of importance that victims of TB should visit hospitals or health care centres for proper medications and diagnosis. People suffering from the disease are to complete their treatment despite the fact that they will start to feel better after taking the medication at earlier stage.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a top infectious disease killer worldwide.
In 2014, 9.6 million people fell ill with TB and 1.5 million died from the disease.
Over 95% of TB deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, and it is among the top 5 causes of death for women aged 15 to 44.
In 2014, an estimated 1 million children became ill with TB and 140 000 children died of TB.
TB is a leading killer of HIV-positive people: in 2015, 1 in 3HIV deaths was due to TB.
Globally in 2014, an estimated 480 000 people developed multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB).
The Millennium Development Goal target of halting and reversing the TB epidemic by 2015 has been met globally. TB incidence has fallen by an average of 1.5% per year since 2000 and is now 18% lower than the level of 2000.
The TB death rate dropped 47% between 1990 and 2015.
An estimated 43 million lives were saved through TB diagnosis and treatment between 2000 and 2014.
Ending the TB epidemic by 2030 is among the health targets of the newly adopted Sustainable Development Goals.
