The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration
and Control has destroyed fake and unwholesome
products worth over N1bn in Ogun State.
The products destroyed included expired products
voluntarily handed over to the agency by compliant
companies in the country
Other products destroyed were fake and counterfeit drugs
seized by Investigation and Enforcement Directorate in
Lagos State and environs, prohibited substandard and
expired food products, cosmetics and other regulated
products seized from manufacturers and importers as
well as distributors.
Speaking at the Sagamu Local Government Dumpsite,
Ogun State, the acting Director General of the Agency,
Mrs. Yetunde Oni, who decried the activities of drug
fakers, described drug counterfeiting as an act of
economic sabotage and terrorism against public health.
Oni, represented by the Director Investigation and
Enforcement Directorate, Mr. Kingsley Ejiofor, noted that
the agency had put in place measures to ensure that
only genuine medicines and wholesome foods were
imported, exported, manufactured and distributed in
Nigeria.
Oni stated, “We just secured a seven-year jail term for a
lady involved in counterfeiting of pharmaceuticals, among
others. We commend the judiciary for its support in the
protection of public health.
“We shall continue to enforce the regulations governing
regulated products in Nigeria. Surveillance and
enforcement operations at our ports, borders and
identified routes used by smugglers have been intensified
and this has led to increased seizures of fake regulated
products smuggled through our borders.”
Oni urged Nigerians to be watchful of drugs, foods and
other regulated products they purchase and report any
suspicious activities within their environment to the
nearest NAFDAC office.
