"I am desirous of going into commercial piggery. I need a wide range of modern information on how to construct modern pens with fitted farrow cages, drinkers and feeders so that I can get out of the kind of farming I did some 18 years ago which unfortunately is the bane of most Nigerian pig farmers in 2016." A questioner asked.

At the rate that the livestock industry is expanding in Nigeria, it wouldn’t be out of place to assume that the improvement cuts across board but unlike other livestock enterprises, ethnic, cultural and religious beliefs have hampered the growth of pig rearing in Africa and Nigeria in particular. From the plains of Abeokuta to the Jos plateau, Nigerians have been actively involved in livestock farming with the exception of piggery.

With the advancement of technology, interested farmers have seen the potentials in this venture especially as countries in Europe, North America and Southern Asia have witnessed economic boom from proceeds of pig rearing. The primary motive behind any pig rearing enterprise is for meat production but newer trends in some developed countries have shown that pig skin is of tremendous economic importance as is its bristles.

I admire your ambition, yes the piggery industry is lagging behind other livestock sectors especially considering the great potential it has in creating employment and providing a cheap quality protein source. At Jessam Cattle Ranch & farms we are striving to build a modern pig/swine farming production line. We are using modern practices as much as possible, we are making great progress in our reproduction of piglets, our litter sizes are on average minimum of 9-10 piglets, we are making progress formulating our feeds to get good feed conversion rates, we give the right preventive medication to all our pigs, we weigh our pigs every week and chart their weight gain, we provide good conducive pig housing with plenty of ventilation, we provide clean water sources with drinking nipples for the pigs.

We believe Jessam Cattle Ranch & farms is heading in the right direction and one day we hope to be a strong brand in the food industry. Please enjoy the video of a section of pig farm.

This is the second post in this series and we are glad to have you here once again. In case you missed the first post, you can find it here: http://farms.com.ng/en/operating-a-successful-piggery-enterprise-in-nigeria.

The importance of understanding the basic techniques that can reduce running cost, enhance productivity and profitability of any business cannot be overemphasized especially in a clime like ours and even though we have discussed most of these techniques in the previous post, we believe that it will do you a lot of good if we provided you with something more practical, something like the general requirements for constructing a pig house. Here goes.

Location is key. Yes, where you situate your business can make or mare such enterprise and this isn’t limited to piggery alone. You need to consider where your target market is and how the cultural and or religious belief in your locale affects your business.
