afrifuturestarz:
Ola Orekunrin, now 30 years from Ilawe-Ekiti in Ekiti State of Nigeria, was born, raised and trained in the UK, where she graduated as one of the youngest medical doctors in England . She is also a trainee helicopter pilot.

While she was studying to become a doctor in the UK, her younger sister fell seriously ill while traveling in Nigeria. The 12-year-old girl, who’d gone to the West African country on holiday with relatives, needed urgent care, but the nearest hospital couldn’t deal with her condition.

Orekunrin and her family immediately began looking for an air ambulance service to rapidly transport the girl, a sickle cell anemia sufferer, to a more suitable healthcare facility. They searched all across West Africa but were stunned to find out there were none in the whole region.

“The nearest one at the time was in South Africa,” remembers Orekunrin. “They had a 12-hour activation time so by the time they were ready to activate, my sister was dead".
“It was really a devastating time for me and I started thinking about whether I should be in England talking about healthcare in Africa, or I should be in Africa dealing with healthcare and trying to do something about it.”

Orekunrin did the latter. Motivated by the tragic death of her sister, the young doctor decided to leave behind a high-flying job in the UK to take to the Nigerian skies and address the vital issue of urgent healthcare in Africa’s most populous country.

Determined to make a difference in medical practice and health care delivery system in Nigeria, Orekunrin decided to set up Lagos-based Flying Doctors Nigeria, the first air ambulance service in West Africa, transporting victims of medical emergencies, including industrial workers from the country’s booming oil and gas sector. It basically provides critical care transportation solutions to both the private and public sector by selling yearly air ambulance cover plans to states, companies and individuals.

Since then, she has successfully steered the company upwards in achieving its corporate goals and ensuring sustained growth.“Against all odds, I passed my A-Levels with flying colors, started my degree at the University of York at 15. I supported myself all through, working. I wrote my final medical examinations at 21, thus emerging the youngest medical doctor in England,” said Ola Orekunrin.

Quite inspiring most especially when our policy maker are planning making medical degree an 11year course claiming it will enable medical graduates psychologically matured to practice.

This is precisely why our leaders must look beyond tribe and political parties , Gray hair and old age and seek out professionals with credentials/resume who have ideas/vision to uplift our Great Nation. Kudos to Dr Ola Orekunrin. To all of you politicizing this issue, just think about what got this Nigerian Doctor to dedicate her life to this cause . This unfortunate scenario is what potentially can happen to any of us in the country. "Strokes / Heart attack/Slump/ High Velocity trauma/ Burns " are diagnosis used in Nigeria and killing us but yet it has not led to outcry for cohesive emergent medical services for our country . Pictures of auto accidents on our bad roads on nairaland, yet no outcry to fix that part of the road on the death-trap Nija highways .In developed world it results in emergent evacuation to nearest trauma hospital or hospital that can quickly open that clogged artery and save that live! Can our country /lawmakers together canvass for Regional solutions and the system that can begin to address this issue ...YES.. Can we budget 1% of national revenue to a problem that affects all of us and benefit all of us. ....YES... Our Leaders are misinformed & too complacent about healthcare risk that knows no economic/social class. Medical emergency affects us all equally. The Nigerian medical assoc & Ministry of health needs to push for designation of few Regional Hospitals as centers of excellence for --TRAUMA & MEDICAL emergencies and an ACTIVATION system that links transporting and receiving centers and please make it meet requirements of International Certification Board and open to its inspections. Ask Dr Orekunrin , it is possible , we only need to make it a priority . So my fellow Nigerians, find your national passion, form your local/state chapter of focus group for --- Nija Against Medical Tourism--- find your house assembly and get involved with the protest to bring focus on the issue the right way. Use your text msgs to get the word out. Leave Buhari/Good luck out of it but put yourself /friends and family in it and look for ways to make it a better Nija for all of us .
Think it and Dream it and ......!!!

That is what we are talking about. Not those that will stay in UK and U.S and be saying how bad Nigeria is. Nigeria can only be better if Nigerians make it better.

The NUC has clearly denounced such statements that Medical Students would spend 11 years in medical schools prior to their graduation

It was an erroneous fact borne out of misinterpretation of some sorts

Studying Medicine still remains at status-quo level (7 years)
