How many years ago? Does it still happen? Yes but not as generalizing as some of you put it. It hardly happens during the early weeks, we get to see some of these during the latter part of the league during to desperation (trying to avoid relegation or go to the continent).

Rwanda’s head coach Antoine Hey is pleased his team successfully carried out his game plan against the Home Eagles of Nigeria in their opening Group C game at the ongoing 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Morocco, Completesportsnigeria.com (CSN) reports.

The Amavubi’s held the Home Eagles to a 0-0 draw, defending resolutely and Hey, who masterminded the draw, admitted after the game that his side were a bit lucky to escape without a defeat.

The Home Eagles had 18 shots on goal with three crashing the crossbar as against Rwanda’s solitary effort on goal.

“It was our idea to defend well and push for a goal towards the latter part of the game. It has worked for us even though we were a bit lucky but all in all we are happy with the result because it was what we wanted,” Hey said during his post-match interview.

“The Nigerian team is a very good side, they have no reason to be ashamed of today’s result. We will support them at the World Cup especially and we would keep supporting them till we meet in the semis or final.”
Rwanda will face Equatorial Guinea in their next game on Friday.

1. Failure To Take Scoring Chances

Salisu Yusuf’s men took charge of the game right from the first minute, but unfortunately, couldn’t convert the plethora of chances they created. Sunday Faleye set the bal rolling when his header from a superb Emeka Ogbubh cross hit the upright in the eight minute.

Rabiu Ali, Stephen Eze and substitute Ibrahim Mustapha all have good chances in the game but were unfortunate not register a goal in the game.



2. Stephen Eze’s Perfect Response To Recent Criticism

Towering centre-back Stephen Eze, looked revitalized after he was dropped for Timothy Danladi in recent test games due to loss of form. But against the Amavubi, he was unarguably the Home Eagles’ best performer as he combined his defensive task dutifully and also surged forward to help the attack.

The Kano Pillars defender also came close to scoring in the first half but his header from a good position sailed over the bar.




3. Ifeanyi Ifeanyi, Rabiu Ali Combo Not WORKING

Midfield duo, Ifeanyi Ifeanyi and Rabiu Ali, struggled to assert their authority in the game. Ifeanyi was replaced by Augustine Oladapo, while coach Salisu Yusuf kept faith with Ali and left him on the pitch for the entire duration of the game.
The Home Eagles best game in the Nigeria Professional Football League invitational tournament was against Enyimba when Salisu paired the duo of Oladapo and Sunshine Stars’ Dayo Ojo in midfield.

It was also evident that the team missed the industry of Afeez Aremu who was ineligible to play for the team after moving abroad and whether or no the coach will be bold enough to ring changes particularly in the midfield in the next game against Libya remains an issue of conjecture.



4. Okpotu Needs To Get His Scoring Boots On

Undoubtedly a proven goal scorer going by his antecedents and goal haul for Lobi Stars over the years in the Nigeria Professional Football League, but Okpotu was below par against the Rwandans. His positioning and hold up play were abysmal and he seemed short of confidence.
It’s difficult to comprehend the head coach dropping him in the next game against Libya on Thursday, but the Panther as he is called by his admirers, must rediscover his old form.



5. Sunday Faleye Proved His Fine Quality Once Again

Young forward, Sunday Faleye, was one of the shinning lights for the Home Eagles in the game. The Shooting Stars player was unlucky not to have converted the two chances that came his way in the game. He also troubled the Rwandans with pace and trickery on the ball.

24 shots average with 3 shots hitting the wood work is a lot. As a matter of fact, it will be be difficult to find a team who will shoot 23 times on goal cumulatively all tournament. I will be worried if the team struggled to create chances but that wasn't the case.

By the way, did anyone notice the long throws by the left back? Every throwing appeared to be a free kick. You could get the vibe the Rwandans were nervous whenever there was a throw in awarded against them. Hopefully the long throw tactics pays off sometime as the tournament went on.

I am quite optimistic about our chances in this tournament. If the team can get it right in front of goal, an unlucky team could be in for a real spanking.

Difference is generalization. Same last season, Ubah went away to win 4:0, this same league (during the latter end of the season). We also had alot of draws and wins during the latter end of the season. You don't generalize.

Pre-2010, we had more of winning at all cost but post 2010, it drastically reduced.

Buy players, play well and win, worse you can get if you don't do any of these remain a draw.

Ojokolo i think took that decision for his son reason because he is on the payroll of the Germans and asking his son to ignore or drop Germany for the super eagles may cost him his job...he has to thread on safe path...deep down he knows his son stand a better chance wit the super eagles... ..

It seems you didn't get my point,my assertion on players invitations was based on likely experience their Fathers must have had during their playing career.

For instance Murphy Akanji was so solid that there was a period he deserved to be in eagles team but was denied the opportunity,out of frustration he moved to Malta,likely this experience must have influenced his son decision not that Nigeria came late cos we never approach him.

Torunarigha issue is different entirely cos i don't believe his Father working for a youth team in Germany might be an issue but the man just don't want the boy to play for us.

Truly Iorfa wanted to play smart but things didn't work out as expected,now at our mercy.

Musa Yahaya Close In On Action With Porto First Team After Dazzling To Send B Team Top




Former Nigeria youth international Musa Yahaya yet again post another top class performance for the B team of FC Porto to power them to a 1-0 win away to Gil Vincente in the Portuguese second division.

Now fully settled in his new role as a right wing-back, the 20 year old played the entire duration of the game, which helped his team extend their lead at the top of the table by six points.

His performances has lead to talks about an imminent promotion to the first team, where he has trained severally the past few months while turning out for the B team.
Yahaya has 14 appearance to his name this season for the B team of Porto, with three assists and a goal as well. A sign of how well he has progressed the past few months at the club.

Nicknamed the “Nigerian Neymar”, he has so far played twice the amount of games he played last season for same club at same level, following his transfer from fellow second division side Portimonense.


Porto will pay the balance of his transfer fee to Portimonense if he plays for the main team between now and his stay at the club, where he is presently the only Nigerian at the club.

CHAN 2018: Yusuf Confident Eagles Will Advance From Group C Despite Draw With Rwanda



Home-based Super Eagles coach, Salisu Yusuf, is still upbeat about his side’s chances of qualifying for the next round despite playing a goalless draw with Rwanda in their opening Group C game of the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Monday night, Completesportsnigeria.com (CSN) reports.

Yusuf stated during his post match interview that the result was not a setback but rather a wake up call for his side who must take their chances in subsequent games.

The Home Eagles were denied thrice by the crossbar in the first half of the draw.

“Generally, it is not a setback because we created chances and we couldn’t score but if we keep creating chances and hopefully take them, we can beat any team in this tournament,” Yusuf said.




Nigeria face Group C leaders and 2014 winners of the tournament, Libya in their next game on Friday. Libya defeated Equatorial Guinea 3-0 in the group’s other match on Monday.

The Home Eagles are in their third appearance at the tournament and have never reached the finals of the competition with a third place finish their best.

They crashed out of the group stages of the last edition in Rwanda in 2016.

Muazzam has already been invited to the main team. The coach has seen him. Let him see other players, he chooses to have a closer look at.

I watched the game yesterday, the Rwandans did not give us time or space, they were always closing down on whoever had the ball. The end result was hurried passes, fluffed shots and disjointed play. I thought the Rwandans would tire out in the second half but those boys do not get tired. We missed chances aplenty. The boys will get better as the tournament Progresses.
