With strong conviction that Nigeria's work in implementing the National Geospatial Data Infrastructure would have important implications for the whole of Africa, the United Nations has stepped in to assist Nigeria in the project. The National Geospatial Data Infrastructure, which started in 2002, is one of the major space programmes being implemented by the National Space Research and Development Agency. It seeks to establish the necessary infrastructure for the use of geospatial information and other technologies for the capture, management, and integration of spatially referenced date. The infrastructure is expected to be a powerful tool for efficient economic planning, sustainable resource management, and investor's information, among others. The Guardian gathered that NigeriaSat-X being built and designed by Nigerian engineers would be launched in the first quarter of next year along with NigeriaSat-2. Representative of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Mr. Dozie Ezigbalike said in Abuja, "We are here to revamp Nigeria's efforts to implement its National Geospatial Data Infrastructure, which started as far back as 2002.'' Director General of NASRDA, Dr. Saidu Mohammed said. " The NigeriaSat-X is being developed by Nigerian engineers at the Surrey Satellite Technology Facility in UK. NigeriaSat-2 and Sat-X would cater for the wider interest of geo-information stakeholders as well as serve a sources of geo-information data acquisition for both core and thematic datasets for the NGDI project."
