Refusal to Sign 2016 Budget: An Affront on Our Collective Sensibility. by OLADD: 7:53am On Apr 01, 2016
Many had at various times expressed worries about the seemingly display of insincerity and non-challance by President Mohammadu Buhari on pressing national issues even before he took the mantle of leadership in May 2015. From stating categorically that Abacha was not corrupt to tagging the fight against Boko Haram as an onslaught against the north and recently, unexplainably keeping mute on Agatu massacre, the list is endless.

However, let's not try to dwell so much on the past but focus our minds on developing issues. During his ongoing state visit to the United States, President Buhari was reported to have purged out his decision not to append signature to the 2016 Budget. He premised his stance on the need to carefully scrutinise the budget in order to determine if "what was passed is the same as the original proposal sent to the NA". This doesn't only sound insulting, it emphasises how our leaders unrepentantly take us for fools. In the first instance, Buhari was cunningly attempting to exonerate the executive from the padding that took place prior to the presentation of the Appropriation Bill to the Red and Green Chambers. It's now on record that the president of the most populous black nation on the planet turned himself to a postman who delivers parcels without knowing its content. Our president personally took a distorted document to the National Assembly without vetting its content only for him to blame govt bearucracy for the anomaly. What a shame! After admitting publicly that the budget was indeed padded under his watch as the CinC, our president is subtlety grandstanding by attempting to flex muscles with the legislators and using them as sacrificial lambs instead of thanking the lawmakers for saving his face from national and global ignominy that trailed the budget padding debacle. The questions are thus; was it the national assembly that padded the budget from the onset? The answer is capital NO. Why is the president suddenly attempting to shod up his battered image by giving the impression that he knew what he was doing from the beginning? With startling revelations from infractions discovered in the original bill that emanated from the executive, the president should thank his stars for having a National Assembly that was magnanimous enough to trim down the budget from its original over blotted figure to about N6.02 trillion passed last week. Aside national interest, that budget should have been thrown to the refuse bin.

Mr. President and his team should stop taking Nigerians for a ride by admitting mistakes whenever they err instead of playing smart with bulk passing. The hullabaloo that characterized the 2016 budget is enough. Wasting another weeks before putting the budget in motion can inflict more pains on the nation's sinking economy.

National Assembly should stop been used as punching bag by the Executive.

Saraki and friends should do the right thing then and stop looking for avenues to loot. When they do our budget would be signed.

Let's eschew sentiment when national issues are discussed. If Saraki had wanted to take his own pound of flesh, he would have instigated outright rejection of that flawed budget. I think the nation should commend the NA for placing national interest far above any personal or primordial interests. That's the truth.

If na to read be the issue, my people make we get another one week patience and wait to see if another story won't come up before we criticise again.
So it won't end again at I didn't go through it.

Any further delay in signing the budget may spell doom for the nation. Nearly all govt activities are in limbo. After all, the whole absurdity started from the presidency.
