Kenya has launched a three-week amnesty to hand in ivory and rhino horns ahead of the world's biggest burning of ivory next month. The mass burning, which includes vast majority of its ivory and rhino horns stockpile, will amount to some 105 tons of ivory, seven times the size of any ivory stockpile destroyed so far, as well as 1.35 tons of rhino horns.

The highly publicized display on April 30 will be led by Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and attended by a gaggle of celebrities, conservationists and heads of state.

More than 30,000 elephants are killed for their ivory every year in Africa to satisfy demands in Asia where raw tusks sell for around 1,100 US dollars a kilogram, according to phys.org. China is seen as the major source of demand for African ivory.

But China has vowed to push strict rules to ban ivory products. Starting March 20th, China extended a ban on ivory and ivory imports listed in its 2015 Provisional Ban until the end of the decade, the State Forestry Administration said on its website.
