For UK schools, If you're going for MSc which is a taught course, the school should normally give you two weeks after the official start date as your latest start date. For PhD which is a research course you could have up to 4 weeks after the official start date as your latest start date but please confirm. E.g. If your official start date on your admission letter for MSc is September 26, you would most likely have up to October 7 to enroll or defer.

The big issue is applying for visa because most schools will request for a tuition deposit before they issue you CAS to apply for visa. And the visa application process can take up to a month. I suggest if you get the award and have your own money pay the tuition deposit and 1st instalment of your fees so that you can get your CAS and apply for your visa of you really want to start in September. If you do that, when NDDC pays (maybe around October) the school would refund you.

If you don't have the money, I agree with what others have said, just defer it but don't tell NDDC you've deferred.

I hope I've made some sense and not confused you altogether. Good luck!

Thank you very much for this wonderful info.

Guy relax. am a 2015 scholar. Just Win the scholarship first. You can defer your award to January or change your university. so don't worry about september. And if you are not from a rich family, pls defer till january if you get the scholarship. My candid advice.

@Realman87, please has your living expenses been paid??

Pls when are the letters usually issued. Because even if one is able to pay the tuition fee deposit and get the CAS one still need the scholarship letter to secure a Visa or else they will ask you to have millions in your account. Pls those who know should inform us

Yes, that's true. You need to show you have the fees for one year of your programme and living expenses of around £9135 (or around £11,500 for London schools) as your living expense for one year. This amount must be held in your account for up to 28 days prior to your application and the statement must not be more than 31 days old. However if NDDC offer you a letter and the award is $30,000 the pound equivalent is around £21,000 so if your fees is around £15,000 and your school is outside London, you still need to show you have (£15,000 + £9,135) - £21,000 = £3,135 which must be in a bank statement of not more than 30 days before application date and held for a consecutive 28days minimum.

Now that UK has opted out of the EU, the pound is bearish against the dollar and let's pray it continues that way so that the $30,000 can amount to a bit more than £21,000.

Having said all this, there's wisdom in defeating your admission of you don't have the balance as evidence when applying for your tier 4 UK visa.

Get out of here please. House, I want to appeal that no one should answer any question from any of the "breakaway" what's appers.

Those of you dumb enough to share your number here for sake of joining the what's app group, don't you think someone from NDDC can note your numbers and trace them back to your applications?

I thought I'd hold this back for the successful awardees but its occurred to me those wanting to start in September may not have enough time.

Please for intending UK scholars please read the visa application requirements:
https://www.gov.uk/tier-4-general-visa/overview

and visa application guide:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-on-application-for-uk-visa-as-tier-4-student

In summary you need 40 points to qualify:
30 points for CAS and 10 for available funds.

To get CAS you need an unconditional offer and pay a deposit of your fees. Most schools will even ask for evidence of funds before they issue CAS 'cos they don't want to have you rejected by UKVI as it will stain their reputation and can cause UKVI to issue them a warning.

For PhD you need ATAS, before applying for visa. It takes 20 working days to be issued, there's no express service.

Tier 4 applicants need tuberculosis test (few exceptions for those who have lived in a first world country for more than 2 years and have not spent more than 6 months in Nigeria on return). As at January, only 2 hospitals in Nigeria are allowed to conduct the test; 1 in Lagos the other in Abuja and I guess it cost around 100k.

All visa applicants need to pay immigration health care surcharge - IHS (£150 per calendar year of visa) before even applying for visa. MSc candidates will likely be offered 16 months visa so you IHS will be £150 + £75 = £225 (payable by credit card). PhD candidate may be issued 4 years visa and IHS will be around £675.

Available funds: please see my previous post (full tuition for 1 year + 9 months living expense which is £9,135 or around £11,500 for London scholars).

English language: I think WAEC is acceptable, again your school will confirm this before issuing you CAS. Otherwise you may need IELTS or you must have completed a degree in a majority English speaking country - Nigeria is not one according to UKVI).

I think that's it, but it takes a long time to get all this sorted (around 2-3 months).

Visa application fee is £328 and processing time is 3 weeks (1 week for priority service but you pay extra £150).

I hope this helps anyone! Start planning now if you're bent on a September start regardless of NDDC award.
