The number of senators accompanying Bukola Saraki to the CCT for the continuation of his corruption trial reduced from 81 to 12.

It appears the popularity of Senate president, Bukola Saraki among senators is dropping gradually.

The Senate president arrived for his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal on Wednesday, April 6, in company of at least 12 senators, The Cable reports.

Some of the senators who showed up for the court hearing are Ike Ekweremadu, deputy Senate president; Sam Anyanwu, Dino Melaye and Andy Uba.

This is a reduction in the number of lawmakers that have been accompanying him to the CCT, since his trial began in September 2015 and the lowest so far, the highest being 81.

He was accompanied by at least 50 senators the first time he appeared in court on September 22, 2015.

His second appearance was on October 21, 2015 and the Senate president was accompanied by at least 81 senators.

As his trial commenced on Tuesday, he arrived in the company of only 15 lawmakers.

Saraki is facing a 13-count charge of corruption filed against him by the Code of Conduct Bureau.

Though, today makes it the eight time Saraki will appear at the tribunal, this is the second day of his trial which started on Tuesday, when the prosecution called its first witness.

The witness narrated how Saraki allegedly laundered billions of naira using fictitious names.
The Senate president had tried to stop his trial at the CCT, but he failed at every turn and on March 24, the tribunal ruled that his trial must continue.

Danladi Umar, chairman of the CCT, dismissed Saraki’s application for adjournment.
