Exclusive: Why Amosun Boycotted Apc’s Lagos Meeting On Osoba's Return by Nobody: 3:47pm On Apr 07, 2016
Fresh fact emerged yesterday as to why the Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun and his deputy, Chief Yetunde Onanuga did not attend the South West reconciliation meeting of the All Progressive Congress, APC where the former governor of the state, Chief Segun Osoba who abandoned the party in the build up to the 2015 general election returned back.. The meeting which was held at the Bourdilon Ikoyi – Lagos home of Osoba had leaders of the party in the region such as the former acting National Chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande, National leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as well as governor of Osun state, Rauf Aregbesola, Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi among others in attendance but Ogun State Governor, Amosun with whom Osoba had disagreement that made him to leave for Social Democratic Party, SDP was absent.

His absence was noted by newsmen but Tinubu debunked insinuation that the reconciliation did not have the blessing of Amosun as he said:” I can assure you that nobody is left out . All the South West governors are well represented here”. However National Mirror gathered that not only was Amosun not in attendance at the meeting but also no single member of the APC from Ogun state attended the reconciliatory meeting, thus raising concerns in some quarters that Amosun and his supporters might have deliberately shunned the meeting. Amosun’s absence at the reconciliatory meeting however gave credence to insinuations in the state about the cold war going on between him and the National leader of the party, Asiwaju Tinubu.

Source who prefers anonymity told National Mirror that Amosun and Tinubu had since parted ways due to the governors’ refusal to respect Tinubu’s choice over the list of ministerial nominees when APC was forming the national government. It was gathered that Amosun believed that he doesn’t need to carry the burden of regarding Osoba as his leader after he had singlehandedly defeated him and others that went to the SDP during the 2015 governorship election. It was also gathered that Amosun may not wish to bow to Osoba and Tinubu in choosing his successor come 2019 and so tactically avoided a meeting where the party leadership might appeal to him to regard Osoba as his leader.. Unconfirmed source also told National Mirror that Tinubu and other south West governors have always expressed their dissatisfaction about Amosun’s closeness to President Muhammadu Buhari, a development which has always made them see Amosun as “ungrateful” to the South West leadership of the party.

Sources close to the governor’s camp however confided in National Mirror that Amosun declined to reconcile with Osoba now because previous efforts by him to reconcile with him before the 2015 election were rebuffed. It was equally gathered that Amosun was unlikely to have attended the meeting because terms of the reconciliatory meeting might not have favoured him. All efforts to get the media aide of the governor, Olajunwon Soyinka to comment were not successful as he would neither answer all calls put through to his telephone lines nor respond to the SMS sent to him.

However, the State Publicity Secretary of APC, Sola Lawal said there was no sentiment attached to Amosun’s absence or that of any of the party leaders in the state at the meeting. Lawal, who spoke with journalists on telephone further stated that Asiwaju Tinubu himself has said that Amosun’s absence has nothing to do with the rift within the party. “There is nothing extraordinary about Governor Amosun’s absence at the meeting. But I have to tell you that neither Amosun nor his deputy were in town to have attended the meeting. No sentiment about Chief Osoba’s return to the party since entry into or exit from a party is always guided by personal will”, Lawal said.
