QUALITY ASSURANCE AND QUALITY CONTROL BY OLUWANISOLA SEUN EMMANUEL EZINE ARTICLE EXPERT AUTHOR ALL RIGHTS RESERVED (C) 2009 The term quality has lots of meaning depending on who is defining it and the knowledge of the writer. Quality is seen from the angle of fitness for use (Juran and Gryna) and this definition is what is found useful here. The word fitness is what really gives the concept quality its real meaning. Other words that are equally relevant are excellence and total conformation. Every organization assures quality. They promise best quality and want to stay on the track. However, one factor or the other affect their quality policy and this paves way for organizations devising means of controlling quality at the raw material state (importation or extraction), processing/refining/work-in-progress state and through to finish goods state. There are number of causes of poor quality and some of them include the following: 1. Poor quality control personnel 2. Poor standards 3. Poor/Below-standard raw materials 4. Inefficient/inexperience workforce 5. Unmotivated employees 6. Poor working environment (Unhygienic environment) 7. Poor technology or out-dated machineries/equipment 8. Sacrificing quality for quantity 9. The cut-down-cost-at-all-means pursuit of the organizations, etc Quality Assurance and Quality Control are two different terms. Quality assurance is concerned about promising that the product in question shall meet the customers’ requirement, specification or taste. It is all about non-deviation from the set standard and the eventual final physical product in terms of quality requirements. Quality control is concerned about all the monitoring activities to ensure conformity to standard or to ensure that the final product meets the targeted standard. Control measures can be applied at the beginning, middle or end of the production process (or at combined or all stages) depending on the company’s policy. It is all about ensuring that the process does not produced deviated product compared to the expected product from its prototype as per company’s, regulatory body’s, industry or international standards. |
