Michael Jackson plans
mega projects in Badagry

BADAGRY, the ancient Lagos State community housing the first storey building in Nigeria and relics of the slave trade, will soon boast of a N59 billion ($500 million) tourism investment. The project is the brainchild of some prominent African-Americans, including the family of ace pop star, Michael Jackson and five black mayors. It is aimed at drawing global attention to the slave trade route and post through which over 40 per cent of the more than 500,000 slaves taken out of Africa were transported to America and Europe as well as make Badagry the best tourist spot in Africa.The prospective investors have come together under the auspices of Motherland Beckons Investments USA,LLC. Representing the Jackson's family in the group is one of the Jacksons Five, Marlon Jackson.

The ex-mayors include Gary L. Loster, Jack C. Sims (two-time mayor of District Heights, Maryland) and Alfred Dixon (Greenevers, North Carolina). Briefing a select group of journalists in Washington DC, United States, Loster, the chairman of Motherland Beckons Investments and former Mayor of Saginaw, Miami, said the project was an emotional one for the group as it had been established that most of those sold into slavery were from Nigeria. Loster said that it was disturbing that the driving force for most of those in the group was the need to find their roots in Africa, adding that Nigeria represented the beginning of the realisation of the desire. He said the time was ripe for African-Americans to remember their roots by investing in their continent, adding that Africa had produced too many illustrious sons and daughters who were sold into slavery than for it not to be developed.

"One is very happy about what has just happened in the United States with the election of the first true black African-American as president. "We need to build on this in order to develop Africa's potential so that it does not just remain potential. "We are looking at how to return our people to our motherland and we cannot think of a better place to start than Nigeria, "Loster said. According to him, his trips to Nigeria in the last 20 years and his visits to Badagry constantly brought up the memory of the slave trade and the need to let the world have a "near reality feel" of what transpired during the slave trade era. He said the idea behind the investment is to develop tourism, culture, education, commerce and life generally for the people of the area by developing the slave trade relics; constructing world class hotels for potential tourists; housing estates to bring life to the area; casinos for potential visitors;

general development of the area through the provision of schools, good roads, hospitals with world class facilities and other facilities; providing jobs for Nigerians who would be involved in the project; resettling those that could be affected by the project; and generally improving the well being of the people of the area and Nigerians. Loster said it is gratifying to note that the vision of the group is in line with that of the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, adding that the investment requires the participation of the state and Federal governments. "We watched the Lagos State Governor the other day speak on a new Lagos, with special emphasis on Badagry, and our vision and ideals seem to be the same", he said. Loster announced that on completion, the group hopes to hand over the project to the state government for management, adding that from the projections, over N17 billion ($417 million) can be earned in the project's first year of operation.

At the presentation, which was accompanied by slides of the project, Loster also said that it was not impressive that Nigeria only received 300,000 tourists last year while South Africa had over 6.6 million. He regretted that Nigeria, with the eighth largest population in the world, which is 2.2 per cent of the world population, is also not on the world tourism map. Marlon Jackson said that his family had agreed that the Jacksons Memorabilia be sited in Badagry in a museum to be named after the family which is now 97% completed just waiting to be commissioned
