HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR READING HABIT (Part One)
Yes, all of us cannot make distinction, because it is believed that
some trait of genius is required to achieve that; however an
average student needs not write WAEC five times, if all is well.
Then if WAEC, NECO, JAMB and co keep releasing the type of
result they are releasing, it becomes obvious that all is not well.
From my 6 years teaching and counseling experience, I realized
that no other counseling topic is more appealing to students than
“how to read and understand”. It is an undisputable fact that more
than 65% of Nigeria students don’t understand when they read,
this has discouraged many from reading; accounting for the
reason why they find succumb in exam malpractice. Whereas, the
problem isn’t that big, all that is needed is a simple secret that will
be revealed in this write up
To achieve effectiveness in reading, your reading habit needs to
be critically examined. Reading habit is the pattern, skills and
method employed while reading. To achieve an effective learning,
the following questions will require adequate answer which could
spur individual to effective reading.


Why do you read?
When do you read
How do you read?
With whom do you read?
For how long do you read?
What must you think about while reading?
Must you jut, if you must jut, how should you do it?
What do you do when you are tired of reading?
How frequent must you read?


WHY DO YOU READ? Research has shown that people read for
various reasons, among which are: to uphold once knowledge; to
please your dad, who insist you have to read; to be free from
ignorance; to secure employment, to pass exams, and so on.
Though, Irrespective of the reason why you are reading, you have
to understand what you read, reading to pass exam requires some
additional peculiar skills. These peculiar skills are as follows
Decide to read and understand: Don’t read because dad /mum
want you to read or because others are reading, read because
you want to understand
Know your examiner and the questions to expect: You can
get to know this, by interacting with those that have attempted
and pass the same exams before. They will surely have a hint to
give you, that is why this blog will be bringing you interview
from those that have excel in academics
How the examiner will want your answer to look like:
consulting the seniors will also help in providing solution to
this question
The easiest and effective way to get things done: there are
surely easier ways of excelling in academic, following this blog
will be of immense benefit, because that is what we will be

WHEN DO YOU READ? Some people can read and understand
at any time of the day; while some have specific time in which
they can read effectively. For some, it is when a cool music is
playing underground, some need absolute silence while some can
only read after a nice rest. The question is- where do you belong?
The only problem is that it is only you can answer this question
and this can be known by trying different time. It needs to be
emphasized that failure to know the actual time in which you can
read effectively do cause failure, because reading at a time you
won’t understand is as useless as not reading at all.


HOW DO YOU READ? Is it by jutting or by reading through?
For how many times must you read to have a perfect assimilation?
These are some of the questions you must answer so as to have a
good reading habit. The following hint will also be helpful:
Read with confidence that you will understand
Note what you don’t understand
It is not yet exam time, you can ask questions, do
Anything you realized you don’t know, don’t abandon, because
it will still be needed some other time, even if you succeeded in
avoiding it now
Let your teacher know you are reading by telling him the
problems you encounter while reading, he will be glad to help
you. Teachers love serious students (it is a secret)
No teacher, consult your friends, they might know it. If they all
