I thought the Ijaw were claiming Yoruba descent? Trouble done break, now that the s**t has hit the fan and it's no longer in anybody's best interest (a.k.a $$$) you are now fighting each other. I don't even understand where you guys get the energy for all this ethnocentrism, stereotyping, generalisations and overall bigheaded-ness thinking your "tribe" is the best and that you can speak for them. I can't even tell the difference (sometimes) between a Yoruba and an Itsekiri, Let alone A Bini and A Yoruba who are fundamentally the same people (genetically and historically) so what is the big deal?

P.S, since when did Yoruba, Bini, Ijaw, etc become a "race" (I understand race as 'Capoid', 'Negroid', 'Congoid', etc., but not by ethnic group, for example the Igbo and Kalabari probably have the same DNA) let's hope there aren't any stormfront members on nairaland right now because they'll have a field day.

I don't think Ijaws claim Igbo descent.Many of their great grand parents and beyond are Igbo due to slavery (Igbo slaves were brought to Ijawland) but I believe the Ijaw tribe did not originate from Igboland.

Ijaws have links with other tribes based on their location- east, west, central, etc.

How is that possible, the Bini have no links to Igboland apart from their empire having some influence over Igbo towns (such as Agbor, which the lady in the picture I posted above is the wife of the traditional ruler.), apart from that, how can they be Igbo, they'd be Yoruba before anything, unless I'm missing something.

I really thought there were ijaw people claiming Yoruba descent, anyway, I know the Ikwerre are claiming Bini descent, I don't know how that's gonna work out, seeing as the people who actually speak a mixture of Igbo and Bini (Ika-Igbo) aren't even claiming descent, but influence from Benin, but that's another thread.

Look east as well as west- there are Benin Igbos and vice versa.

Why does a minority tribe have to claim descent from a larger tribe.

For all we know, Yorubas are descended from Ijaws and Igbos are descended from Ogonis
