Episode 1 It was a stormy and thundrous afternoon in the city of Kano. The cloud was pitch black, threatening to cry. The sun found canopy under the thick cloud, warm but heavy wind blew from the south, tossing away any material that dare stand in its way. Ranty sounds of thunder permeated the magnificiently designed room, Hassan’s heart beats weren’t helping matters, they seem to be in rythme with the thunder. Each pump of blood pervaded fear within his being. He swallowed hard for the umpteenth time, boils of sweat tickled down his skin, defying the cold atmosphere. Hassan paced around like someone whose wife is experiencing her maiden labour. Its high time he let his father know about his decision to renounce islam- a religion his ancestors had practiced so faithfully. Yes he knew it won’t be easy but the squeaky wheel gets the grease. He stuck his legs into his slipper, took in a big gulp of air and reached for the door knob. He turned it slowly and walked out to the hallway, heading to his father, to meet his fate. Hassan Abdul-Azeez was first born son of the prominent Abdul-Azeez Usaini xvi the 21st century emir of kano. The emir so much loved his son that he didn’t want anything to separate them, he had Hassan pass through western education here in Nigeria so he could teach him all there is to know about royalty, his plans was for Hassan to succeed him! He didn’t want royalty transfered to another family. Hassan opened the palace door with shaky hands and trembling feet. He had never felt like this before! He spent all his life in the modern palace, why was he having this strange feeling now? His facial expression script it all, he was greatly worried. His dad sat on the high and mighty throne with two body guards standing by his right and left respectively. Four chiefs occupied the chairs below the throne. The palace was well furnished, it looked nothing less of a modern palace, most of its decos were imported. “sannun ku” he greeted breathlessly, with his head slightly bowed in respect. “salama alaikum” the chiefs chorused, meaning “peace be unto you” Hassan sat on one of the chairs by his right. The Emir knew the kind of son he had in Hassan, hassan was a core introvert, he wouldn’t show in the palace by this time of the day if he had nothing important to discuss. “is anything troubling the prince? The emir asked on noticing Hassan’s countenance. “i request to speak with my dad….alone” came the reply from hassan. The Emir motioned the brown horse tail he was holding. Action speaks louder than voice, the guards and chiefs deserted the palace as commanded. Hassan stared blankly at his dad, he was battling how best to present this to his father. He sighed. ” father, i want to make an important request” “go ahead son, you know i’ll do anything and everything for you” replied the king who was oblivious of his son’s request. Hassan threw his father another quick glance; beyond the royal attaire, he saw a man who had a blazing passion for Islam and wishes all his family members to follow in is footprints. For a moment, Hassan thought of aborting his plans, he thought against it when he remembered the promise he made to Madison. No! He can’t afford to loss her….. “father,,, i….i uhm…..i wish to convert to christianity” he found himself stammering. At the drop of a hat, the tender smile Emir Abdul was wearing drifted to a heart crushing frown. Hassan could swear he saw real fire replacing his father’s pupils. “what did you just say? The emir got up angrily. Hassan’s heart skipped, he also got up. “calm down dad…..i…” “shut up” the Emir shouted, and got into a session of loud coughs. His heart ached badly, Hassan wished he could swallow back his words, too late to cry when the trigger is pulled. The Emir fell to the floor helplessly, he had been managing cardiovascular attacks for the past few month now. Hassan grew red with regret. “Aminu!” he screamed, a guard ran in almost immediatley. “la’ila” he wailed when he saw the Emir laying on the floor, he was dumbfounded. “what are you waiting for? Won’t you help me?!” hassan exclaimed angrily |

EPISODE 2 The emir was rushed to a private hospital in company of his wife and two children. He was taking to a special ward; a ward dedicated to him alone. The ward had his name inscribed on its doorpost. The reason isn’t a far cry from the fact that he built the hospital. Hassan sat with his mum in the waiting room, they were not allowed into the ward. Aminat the emir’s wife was visibly shaking, she kept muttering incoherent prayers, she wasn’t ready to be a widow…no not yet. Hassan didn’t know what to do, he was caught between two stools, should he continue being a muslim for his father’s sake or abide by his promise to Madison? God! He was drop dead confused. *********************** Chloe stared affectionately at her now miserable daughter. Madison the last of her children had refused to eat or go out of the house ever since her parent’s told her about their plan to return to the United states for good. Chloe knew why her daughter was adamant to their trip, she was in love with a Nigerian, not just a Nigerian, a muslim! Geez she would never let that grow under her feet, yes she loved her daughter, she was doing everything for her best interest, if only Madison could understand! Madison came down to Nigeria with her family when she was sixteen. Her dad, Robertson was a contractor, he got a rossy fedral contract which paid off more than what he ever envisaged. He decided to reside in Nigeria. Madison attended a Nigerian university where she met a charming young man, who gained her love, the feeling was mutual. They scaled through variant challenges, their religious differences was the stumbling block left. Madison’s dad was a clergy while hassan’s father was an emir. the two parents didn’t for one minute accept love was a powerful spirit capable of breaking strongholds and concrete beliefs. They were all against this relationship, hassan however promised to talk to his dad about it, Madison was waiting and hoping for a positive outcome, albeit her hopes weren’t high, only sheer fluke can rescue the love birds. Madison felt a soft tap on the shoulder. She turned abruptly, her mum smiled and sat next to her, on the bed. The room looked so very untidy, quite unusual of her. “my child, i understand your predicament, believe me, i really do……” “no mum. You don’t” Madison caught her mum short, she was tired of hearing soothing words acompanied with absolutely no action. Chloe readjusted her seating position. “you see, sometimes we chase what is never meant to be ours, and we end up lossing hands down. You and hassan are not meant to be, its best if you give each other a little space, i’m sure you would learn to love again, there are many unfished fishes in the water, Madison” chloe advised softly. Madison shrugged, she wish stopping her heart from beating for hassan was easy. “i understand mum” she replied, with her head tilted down. “thats my girl….cheer up okay” her mum gave her a heart warming smile before vacating the room. Madison’s cell phone beeped almost immediately her mum dashed out. “my heartbeat calling” smile greased her beautiful face again. She had been waiting patiently for this moment; Hassan promised to talk to his dad about their relationship. Albeit her hopes weren’t raised, she knew it takes a stroke of fluke for the emir to accept her. She picked the call with a heartful of euphoria. Hassan told her to meet him in their usual spot. The duo stopped visiting each other after a their parents had a heated argument. On the fateful day, Madison visited the palace, with the hope of seeing her heartbeat. The emir had her seized and thrown in the palace cell. What a tragic day it was for her! Her parents had to swallow their ego and plead with the emir. He let go of Madison after bolts of arguements with her father. Hassan learnt about his father’s stupid act and drove down to the Robertson residence, where he got what he least anticipated. Mr Robertson gave him a doze of his father’s medicine. After that incident, the love birds resolved to see eye-to-eye in a restuarant situated two blocks from Madison’s residence. Madison scampered her way out of the house unnoticed, she was now an expert an sneaking. As she approached the restaurant, she could see Hassan from afar, he was leaning on his car with arms folded to his chest. She held her chest tightly to prevent her heart from ripping out, her heartbeats increased tremendously. Should she elope tonight with hassan? Has his dad finally accepted their relationship? Should she break up with him now? Many thoughts coursed her head. Oh God! She was drop dead confused. She felt stuck between two mighty mountains. |

Episode 3 “Hi” Madison greeted with a gentle peck on his cheek. “how is my queen today? Hassan forced himself to speak, evading the dampness of his heart. From his countenance Madison knew something was wrong somewhere. Oh how she wish it was’nt what she was thinking. “you don’t look happy, everything okay? She asked in her american accent, she’ve spent years in Nigeria, some of the things she’ve not lost to the Nigerian nation are her accent and skin colour. Hassan couldn’t hold it any longer, he just have to tell her whole nine yards. “my dad! He had a heart attack today, it was so worst that he’d have to be flown out of the country for further treatments” Madison was gobsmacked, this wasn’t what she bargained for, now she know her mum was right when she said she, Madison and hassan weren’t meant to be. “you know, i can’t help but blame myself, its all my fault….i…..” Madison cut him in. “no hassan, its not your fault, if there is anyone to blame, that should be me. I’m just like a pest in your life, ever since we met, i’ve caused you nothing but trouble….i’m sorry hassan” she summoned the whole energy in her to stop herself from crying. The more she tried, the more rains of tears flood her eyes. She couldn’t break herself to believe she was leaving hassan. Fate can be so cruel sometimes! He was the only one who could draw out genuine smile from the darkest part of her heart, he was the only first and true love she ever experience. Hassan was confused. “w….wh….what do you mean? He asked in utter frustration. “hassan we live in two separate worlds, separated by religion, royalty and race. Our destinies are separated like heaven and earth, we were never meant to take a step from platonic friendship….i love you hassan i’m sorry we have to end it this way” Hassan rubbed his eyes fiercely no! This can’t be happening, it must be some sort of dream. ” no Madison, i can’t last a day without you and you know it, please don’t leave me. If you want, we can elope, yes! To a far away country where no one would know us, let alone disturb.” Madison shoke her head in the negative. “i’m doing this for you hassan, all for you. Your sick father needs you, the palace need you and your people need. They all need you more than i do. You are a prince i am nothing but a foreigner who’d ruin your life and ambition…..farewell Hassan. Hassan held her cheeks with both hands, tears steamed his dark face. The last time he cried like this was when he lost his twin, Hassana. That was eight years ago. He had learnt to move on, Madison coming into his life was a great help with that. He’d think Madison was an incarnate of hassana. They both had one thing in common- brightening up his mood. He can’t lose Madison! What would his life be like? Trash, hopeless, frustrated, miserable? “Good bye hassan, please don’t bother looking for me ’cause we’d be moving out of the country sooner or later. Please remember this, i love you and i’ll always do” she pecked him on the forehead. “take this necklace, it’ll remind you of me….bye” she gave him a silver necklace with a pendant made of glass. Inside the glass was a capture of her beautiful self. Hassan wept to stupor he didn’t mind the embarassing fact that he was standing on the round. He wished the earth around him would just queak and swallow him up. What reason is there to leave when two most important people in his life are gone? He wiped away his tears with a small oxblood hankie. Every cloud has a silver lining, its high time he concentrate more on the family he have left; his sick father, aging mother and kid sister. His father wasn’t polygamous as against most rich men from the north. Hassan admired that and promised himself to stick only to one woman. Woman? He just realised he’ve lost the very woman he loved, no other woman can occupy his now shattered heart. He picked his broken self together and drove back to the palace, what a day! First he gave his dad a heart attack and now his lover have left him, the joyous hassan in him flew away, he was left with a shattered body and soul to deal with. Madison and her family left the country a weak later. There in the united states she realised she was pregnant. She’ve already call it quits with hassan, moreso the pregnancy wouldn’t change anything. Her belly grew bigger as the days passed by, nine months later; the glorious period! She gave birth to a set of identical twins; Michael and Gabriel. She nutured and showered them with all the love a mother could breed. But something was missing- a father! Five years afterwards, she fell in love with Spencer sherwood; an afro american. Their beautiful union brought forth a child- Nathan. Sherwood died a couple of years later. Leaving Madison to think she wasn’t destined to be married. |

EPISODE 31 The opening ceremony was superb! Guests from all walks of life; politicians, prominent business and a host of many others were present to grace the occassion. So far, it had been bublee. Three entertainers; two musicians, a comedian had performed excellently on stage. The trails of their entertainment still evident on the smiling faces. Gabriel had smiled a little. He didn't laugh like a fool. Inaudible voices emanating from the audience died down shortly after the event hosts came back on stage. 'alright. Ladies and gentlemen its time for the major event of the day!!!' the male host said, smiling gleefully. His masculine voice well pitched by his head-worn mic. 'precisely. Ladies and gentlemen put your hands together as the CEO of 'amazing wines' steps forward to unveil the latest brand' said the hostess. 'Mr. Jude dominic!' the host completed. 'i can't wait to have a taste of another amazing wine' 'i just can't get enough of the judean wines' the host replied in a relatively low tone. They vacated the stage for Jude. Soft music blended with endless applauses filled the air as the young CEO stepped on stage. The stage lights swaped; Blue rays ejected from its source, directing its rays to the west. In the same vain green rays shot from the west to the east. Making the hall darker than it was five minutes ago. Gabriel rose from his seat. Its time he took advantage of the gloomy stage lights before Jude end his speech and the lights are revamped to ideal brightness. He felt the weight of his gun. Assured that its in place, he advanced towards a lady clad in blue dinner gown. His heart beat tripled. Balls of sweat formed on his forehead. For the past hour, he hadn't got closd to Jude. This was his chance! Jude's was wing was occupied to the brim, by a selected few. He'd kept tabs on a particular lady in the wing. He'd figured she's a lone lady who love to rub shoulder's with the 'big boys' . She would be his pathway to the wing. Five minutes ago he'd watch her walk out of the hall. Maybe to a restroom, to recieve or make a call or anything. He don't care to know. She was returning to the wing. He doubled his pace. Brushed two tables and ran into three toddlers in his hot stealthy pursuit. Finally he caught up with her. He purposely ran a shoulder into her. The diversion was needed for him to remove his gun carefully, rapidly. 'watch it. Psycho!' the lady blurted. 'sorry miss. I'm lost. Think you can help me out?' Gabriel said politely. Unfortunately the lady was still mad. 'is that an appology? Manner-less terk' she replied. She began walking away. He let her move three stepsthen graabed her arm. She tried freeing herself but his grip was tight. He stepped two pace closer. Half covered her from possible watchers. 'let me go!' her voice this time was louder. Gabriel looked around rapidly. She'd drew some attention. He could see a male figure, perhaps a guard walking towards them. He pushed the gun barrel into her stomach. He stood in position such that the gun wouldn't be obvious tmwn anyone. The lady gasped. He let go her arm. Gun pointed to her. He placed a finger on his lip, signalling silence. 'from now i'm in control. You do as i say' he whispered. The lady breath in for a duration longer than normal. Obviously shaken by unmeasurable fear. 'if i don't?' she managed to ask. 'i'll shoot. The gun's silenced, it would sound like a deep romantic cough. Your dress would be drenched by your own blood. I'll drag you out like a drunk girlfriend who spilled red wine on her dress. Only you would know what happened but you can't speak. You would die slowly, painfully' Gabriel intimidated. He'd recited those lines perfectly. They weren't his, they were Michael's--he'd read it from Michael's diary sometime ago. He looked over his head. Some attentions have been diverted albeit the supposed guard was closing in. 'i'll scream!' she whispered back. For a moment Gabriel thought his words made no effect on her. On the contrary, he saw a short lived fear in her eyes. She is only proving stubborn. 'it would be useless because i'll scream louder. We would be thrown outside' Gabriel replied. The man got tn them. He was truly a guard as defined by his uniform and night stick. 'pretend you're my girlfriend' Gabriel whispered in her ears. 'whats going on here?' the guard asked. The lady looked at Gabriel then returned her gaze to the guard |
