Yes, it can be quite normal to have painful breasts. Pain that fluctuates with the menstrual cycle is almost always due to normal changes in the body and not to breast Disease.

Breast are made up of cells that are sensitive to estrogen and progesterone. As the estrogen level increase during menstrual cycle, and as progesterone adds to the already stimulated breast tissue, the breast will become sensitive, especially during the day just before the menstrual period.


Some women have breast that are unusually sensitive to this hormone fluctuations of the menstrual cycle. Thier breast can become so tender, just before thier period starts that they cannot sleep on thier stomachs. This is normal for them. The woman who has this type of pain does not need to worry, since it is not a sign of cancer or of any other disease process.

If the breast hurt, the problem is usually not cancer. It is mostly likely due to normal hormonal changes of the breast or fibrocystic breast change. If you do have unusual breast pain, however, see your doctor.

Breast cancer can hurt. Cancer is so slow in growing, that it does not normally cause breast pain, but if you have a lump, whether or not it hurts, see your doctor.
