Today we will learn the truth why you might not be able to build muscles the way you want, or at the rate you would want. Let’s discuss some of mistakes that most people do, so you can avoid those mistakes and start building muscles properly.

Overtraining. Some people might think this is not real, but a lot of studies showed that overtraining is actually a real thing and can be a real roadblock to gain muscles. There is a widely accepted fact that more is better, but when it comes to training, more is not better. Only the right amount of training is better. Problem with overtraining is also that people do more than they should, and when they realize that doesn’t provide any good results, they try harder, they do more. Guess what? You are going even deeper into overtraining, and that can only do harm without any good results.

Another thing to overtraining is undertraining. Undertraining is when you go to the gym, drink all that supplements you got and then go to the training machine and start counting reps… 12… 12… 12… Ok, I am good. Next machine. The reps that you are counting don’t mean anything. That’s not how any of this works. If you want to build muscles, you need to forget about counting reps. The only thing that really matters is the intensity of your workout.

Don’t be afraid of doing hard exercises. Every one of us has some of those exercises that we are not comfortable doing them. For example, squats, dead lifts or bench pressings. But look, those are the exercises that will give you the most out of it. If you want to add muscle, you should get out of your comfort zone and start doing those exercises and start building your strength.

Keep in mind, if you are just starting, don’t be intimidated what others around you are doing. There are a lot of beginners discouraged when they see other people in the gym benching 300 - 400 pounds, or doing some other heavy exercises. You are forgetting one thing. They didn’t start with that, and that doesn’t mean you should start with that. Everyone start somewhere. Everyone start at the bottom. You start somewhere and you build from there.

Nutrition is the key of building muscles. There is a thing called “empty eating”, which means that even if you are eating a lot, in terms of calories intake, you are not providing the right nutrients that muscles need for growth. So, calories alone will not help you, you need to provide your body with the right type of calories to build muscles.

Although nutrition is the key, consistency with nutrition is important. You can’t just make a change, make a meal plan, and follow it for few days, and then you think it’s fine and you will build muscles right away. You have to make sure that you are consistent with your diet, with your meal plan and your strategy, and make sure that you apply all that in a long term approach.
