The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has faulted claims by the minister of state for petroleum resources, Ibe Kachikwu, that trucks conveying petrol were being diverted from Lagos to Cameroon and Chad. Kachikwu speaking at a town hall meeting organised by the Federal Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism on Monday, April 25, blamed unscrupulous dealers for the ongoing fuel scarcity experienced across the nation.
He said the biting scarcity was because truckers were diverting petrol to other countries, adding that the federal government was planning to make sure that only truckers who can install trackers on their trucks are allowed to convey petroleum products. But Kachikwu’s claims have elicited reactions from the chairman, NUPENG, Lagos zone, Alhaji Tokunbo Korodo, who told the Punch that the minister’s statement was a cover-up for the inefficiency on the part of the NNPC.
