The information can help save life. The recommended pressure for my SUV is 32 psi (or 221kPa) but anytime I pump the tires with a vulcanizer, they pump it to 50 -60psi even when I tell them 32 psi. They claim because of the potholes in our roads that is why the tires need to have more pressure. I simply reduce the pressure with the aid of my digital tire pressure gauge to 32 psi moreover the car has a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) that monitors tire pressure in each tires. Since I monitor my tires pressures through the onboard screen of the car, I have noticed a trend. On short distances, my tires each usually gain 1 - 2 psi and so it increases from 32 psi to 34psi but on long journey and at full speed, the tires usually gain between 4 - 5 psi so it increases from 32psi to 37 or 39psi. This happens irrespective of whether the weather is hot or cold. Imagine the increase if I have left the 60psi which the vulcanizers usually put. I encourage everyone know the recommended tire pressure of each tires (usually seen on the door side of the driver's side) and maximum pressure each tires can take (usually labelled on the tire as "MAX 40 psi" or as the case may be). Knowledge of these two can prolong tire lifespan and YOUR LIFE. Also, get a digital tire pressure gauge and/or a manual tire pump. You check your tire pressure before any journey and after you have come back from the local vulcanizer shop. You can pump your tires yourself with the manual pump because trust me, those vulcanizers don't know jack about this. They only know how to pump air and change tire. 3 Likes |

God bless U, bro. I'm checking mine right away. Funny enough, some of the so called new tyres are even worse than some fairly used ones. My experience with new tyres in terms of durability in the last couple of years has not been a nice one. They hardly last one year before they get twisted, even when I do wheel balancing and alignment regularly. |

Another piece of advice that will be useful is to note that the sticker on the door measures pressure in Psi and not kPA. so you must be extra careful to be sure your road-side vulcaniser is not reading the kPA values. Ive had several instances where I had to correct vulcanisers. Still they do what they want. Personally, I have my own pocket guage. A reliable brand I ordered on amazon and always have that in my car. I trust that more than anything else and that is what I stick to. There are many other reasons why tyres blow-out. The best advice is to do a quick research on this online. |

ojmaroni247: i stick to 40psi too on 195/65r15 another aspect is dt u give ur figure + or - 5 as most vulcanizers ur manual pressure gauge which is mostly inaccurate under inflated tires are even as dangerous as overinflated tires 2 Likes |

Either over or under-pressurized tires will result in blow-outs. In fact under inflation is one of the leading tire blow-out causes worldwide. An under-inflated tire will increase the contact patch the tire has with the road and thus increase friction (heat). Also under-inflation will mean that the tire walls will bend more often generation added heat. Both increase the risks of a blow-out. Its also good to rotate tires according to the mileage stated in your owners manual. If not, your tire can wear on a particular side until a blow-out results. 1 Like |

The tire rubber expands on a hot road while drivng and that will actually release pressure but also make the tire weaker because the walls become thinner under expansion. But what also happens is the air inside the tire expands as it is heated by the hot tire. Hot air expands and increases the pressure along side the expanded tire. 32psi is for regular air temperature and i habe never seen any tire that rates above 41psi. Maybe they exist but i have never seen one. The rated PSI leaves plenty of room for heat expansion of the air. Not only expansion of the tire rubber, but the air inside. I had new tires installed at a US based Tire service center and they filled my tires with Nitrogen air. I assume it is because Nitrogen is more dense and also more stable under extreme temperature changes in a place that gets as hot as an oven during parts of the year and cold as a freezer during other parts of the year. |

I have also discovered that the popular gauge used by vulcanizers in nigeria is totally inaccurate. So you should not rely on its reading. Get your own instrument for taking the guage of your tyres. That's what I have done - I have a small device that pumps the tyre and it also has a metre that reads the guage accurately. 1 Like |

NafeesaAA: Your tire pressure for the four tires is actually 32 psi. Your spare tire is what should be 60psi. |

Most of the roadside vulcanisers use the mechanical pressure gauge. I believe it's the one they've been using since their apprenticeship days. I have stopped going to the roadside vulcanisers long ago. I patronize the Tyre service centres. In fact, every car owner should have one in his car. SAFETY FIRST. |

CAVAET: 1. The road side Vulcanizers may have considered that when you get to their shop, you tire is already hot and the 50psi gauge they give you is equivalent to something less than 45psi when cooled. 2. The natural air they pump into your tyre is less dense than pure Nitrogen, which is the recommended. 3. Your tyre is no longer airtight by the time they work on it twice with thier 'club', so they try to 'slightly' overfill to provide for air loss over time. My Advise: Get your private tyre gauge, possibly an eletronic one as well as a mechanical one. Use this to ascertain your normal tyre pressure before driving in the mornings. Also ensure you use only the recommended tyre type for you vehicle. This is the only condition by which the readings on your door frame will be useful. Also avoid terrible road terrains or drive at a very reasonable speed if you must ply the bad routes. Bon voyage! 2 Likes |

Untainted007: Hmmm, you're all shifting the blame to the vulcanizer and left the driver out of it. If the vulcanizer can't do his work well what then is the job of the driver since he is the one driving the car.? |
