BENUE State governor, Chief Samuel Ortom, has raised the alarm that his people were being suffocated by the invading herdsmen.

The governor, who spoke while receiving the House of Representatives members on Complaint and Public Safety, at the Government House, Markurdi, lamented the pains the people are passing through due to the invasion of the herdsmen, which he said, had already been compounded by economic hardship.

“This is a trying period for us in Benue State. At present, we cannot pay salary of workers due to reduction in federal allocation to the state and the only area we ought to get succour is farming, which many of us have embraced. Regrettably, no one can go into farming now since the herdsmen have taken over our farmlands’.

“As I am talking to you, about eight local government areas in the state had already been taken over by the Fulani herdsmen.”

The council areas are; Buruku, Tarka, Guma, Gwer West, Makurdi, Katsina Ala, Kwande and Agatu.

The governor, who lamented the poor state of the economy and the pains the herdsmen had already inflicted on the people of the state, said there is the need to assist the affected people.

He, however, criticised the policy of creating grazing routes and grazing land for cattle as archaic, saying that ‘in Benue State, we do not have land for grazing.

Ortom urged the government to follow Europe and other nations that had embraced cattle ranch where basic infrastructure are provided for herdsmen

Earlier, the committee chairman, Honourable Aminu Jaji, had said that his committee was in the state on a fact finding mission on the crisis, saying that the house regretted the killings that took place in Agatu Local Government Area of the state.

Lalasticlala, the governor of Benue state has stated that there is no available land for grazing in that state.

Why is he just "crying out" helplessly?. The situation calls for dexterity, pragmatism and some socio-political and security sagacity. Benue State voted massively for APC and he should exploit access to the Federal Government. He, George Akume and Audu Ogbeh should visit the President and put pressure on him to act more decisively. People are getting killed and frustrated. I think they can handle this matter better than this.

These governors should stop whinnying and take the bulls by the horns, arm their people and repel those bloodthirsty invaders.

They keep placing the lives of their people in danger by waiting for FG protection.

If eight local govt has been taken over by these terrorists what's the guarantee on the remaining ones Is he waiting to be run out of the state before taking urgently needed action

As we pray for peace and the continued existence of our dear country Nigeria, some sections of the country needs to understand that violence is not the solution. The recent riot in Aba is a reference point in such cases. It was alleged (without proof) that an Hausa man stabbed an Igbo guy to death and immediately the IGBOS resorted to reprisals. It is so unfortunate that the easterners could react in such a brutal manner. Why can't you arrest the Hausa man and hand him over to the police? Two wrongs will never make a right. How can you kill in order to avenge the death of another? Southerners generally are known to be peaceful either SW/SS or SE. We should not be tempted to act like animals who don't value lives all because of retaliation and jungle justice. The IGBOS should remember they are the most travelled tribe and they have more IGBOS up north than Hausa/fulanis in the SE. The actions in Aba could put the IGBOS in the north in trouble if the northerners decides to retaliate. The north has been known for their aggressive approach to confrontations and in order to avoid a scenario of the civil war, I implore the IGBOS to embrace diplomacy and peace. No body has the monopoly of violence. The northerners and the herdsmen are Nigerians and they have the right to live and do their business in any part of the country. They should not be stigmatised because of the attitudes of a few bad eggs amongst them. The recent Aba clashes is a result of the staunch hatred and bile Nnamdi Kanu preached on radio Biafra. He poisoned the minds of millions of IGBOS and made them un patriotic. He called for the death of Yoruba and Hausa fulanis and the results is the clashes we have today. This is why people like Nnamdi Kanu does not deserve freedom. He is a threat to national security. The solutions to this incessant clashes is to support the grazing bill so the federal government can create grazing reserves for the fulanis in every state of the country. Even the governor of Ebonyi state agreed that the grazing bill is the only path to peaceful coexistence. The IGBOS need to learn from Yorubas peaceful nature. This is why the SW is the most peaceful region in the country. Yorubas are slow to anger no matter the level of provocation. It's not cowardice but diplomacy. I will not support the killing of anyone in any form. We must respect the sanctity of life and stop acting like animals. Until the IGBOS begin to see Nigeria as their home and forget the evil thought of Biafra, they will keep seeing others as enemies especially the northerners. Lord luggard saw a great potential in our diversity before merging us. Let's works together to make Nigeria great. Say no to senseless killings. Btw I'm Yoruba and just making #commonsense cool

I understand that peaceful coexistence means when they attack, you resort to crying like the 9 LGs under occupation by Fulanis in Benue ? Igbos are not born that way. Ebonyi governor is speaking for himself, not even for his immediate family, talk of a whole Ebonyi state. He was not speaking the mind of people that voted him. We wait for him to bring his grazing bill to state assembly and see if they will not stone him. The treatment for his case is for another day.
