In the last year presidential election Nigerians chose a former military dictator and anticorruption crusader Muhammadu Buhari. Goodluck Jonathan became the first Nigerian leader to lose an election since democracy returned to the nation in 1999. While Buhari has been facing a lot of criticism for his slow approach for implementing much-awaited change, Nigerians praise him for anti-corruption war and success against the Boko Haram. However, Kehinde Ifemi Maye in this piece for Scannews explains why Nigerians are missing former president Jonathan.

Let’s be honest! We miss GEJ. He was slow but he was moving. He was quiet yet we were kept informed. He was soft yet Boko Haram was fazing out. He was dark but we had light. His administration was a vector quantity, it had direction. He was reserved yet we had fun (thanks to Patience). He was a hero yet we never praised him. He promised little, he gave more. But i guess we wanted much more.

So we were deceived. They condemned his strength and exaggerated his fault. They painted ‘Nigeria’s problem’ as ‘Jonathan’s problem’. They promised the impossible. Just to get our votes. And so we were deceived with their cry for ‘change’. But how can they change us when they cannot change themselves!

Surely we do. Even the zombies knows that things are getting so bad now

Gej was not perfect in his own way, but our standard of living improved very well under him. He is my hero I will continue to love and miss him.
