Never follow any link asking you to update your personal details, if necessary contact your email service provider to be sure you are on the right path. Most of this evil links are always in Spam Folder if need be you need to visit the spam folder ignore any message asking you to update your details then directing you to an external link looking exactly like your email login.

Seriously if you can gently follow those tips listed above am very sure you are 99.9% secured as you are protected from PHISHING and bruteforce Attack which are the widely used method of getting unauthorized access to people's e-mail accounts.

One more tip is avoid using the same password for the same accounts on the internet.
E.g dont use the same password you used in registering for http://nct.com.ng on http://facebook.com, am saying this because if the attacker manage to get access to your facebook account he won't use the same password to login to your other online account.
