EXCLUSIVE: If FG Returns Subsidy?!!! by Macfloyd: 4:37pm On May 13, 2016 |
Note: This isn't a thread for APC vs. PDP or tribal/ethnic bashing and insults, this is also not about the blame game between the past and present administrations. This is for all intellectuals and Nigerians concerned about this country. Lets assume FG wishes to please the masses and go back to the subsidy regime, and fix the price of petrol @N86.50: ----Nigeria is currently earning pennies from crude because of low crude prices ----With pipelines being blown in the Niger-delta,Nigeria is practically grounded in terms of revenue generation ----Marketers will still sell @ N120-N150 all over the country and still collect subsidy from Govt, thereby making double gains -----4 years from now,we will wish we have removed the subsidy today. -------The timing will never be right -----@ N145 though is high and it will be difficult to accommodate, but trust market forces to level prices out and reduce the price much downwards over the coming months. The FG has made the best decision ever in the history of Nigeria . Is it only fuel we need? What of roads, hospitals, housing, education, welfare, power etc. The subsidy claims 1/3rd of Govt revenue according to Sanusi. Sanusi made this claim during Occupy Nigeria in 2012 and then oil price was 102 dollars/barrel. Now the oil price is 45 dollars/barrel and for the fact that this economy has not collapsed is a miracle. Go to Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Venezuela, and Brazil and see the impact of low oil prices to their economy. These countries have all removed subsidy and also increased fuel prices by very high percentages despite the fact that some of these countries have over 500 billion dollars in their reserve. Nigeria has nothing in our reserve hence at 45 dollars/barrel oil, there is nothing to absorb the shock. Our oil production is dropping due to militancy in Nigerdelta and revenue plunging down drastically. This is simple economics and about the future, expect nothing less than 1 million civil servants fired after if subsidy isn't removed now. This is the price we must pay for 16 years of mismanagement without saving. It's time to move forward and look ahead. NB: If you think otherwise, 2019 is only a few months away, you have your PVC, argue with it.
