MetaHuman: Well....I agree my quotation is a bit out of date (two years old....and for a salon-type car) Still....60K is small change to spend for changing tyres....compared to the nearly N100000 or more you would spend treating broken bones and other trauma at your local hospital because that bad tyre you were managing burst at high speed..... |
Re: FRSC Pulled Me Over Twice Today To Check My Tires by Nobody: 8:56am On May 14, 2016 |
Quakertellicus1:brand new tyre is not a proof against accidents.. Brand new tyre doesn't mean it won't burst on high speed.. They should atleast wait till we start manufacturing tyres in Nigeria again and they become cheap. The whole exercise is stupid.. They should intensify their sensitisation about speed and overloading. Developed nations don't go about checking people's tyre, but there is speed limit for every area and you dare not go beyond those limits. 1 Like |

xandy84: I have a fire extinguisher in most of my cars and a first aid kit in all of my cars here. Sometimes we don;t have to wait for the government before we take steps to protect our life and property. I've never had my tires checked during inspection in both Texas and California but then I don't drive with iffy tires so the inspector might have not bothered. Tires are very important and dictates the driving experience you'll have wit your car. |

MetaHuman: It's all about reducing the risk factor. It's far less likely for a brand new tire to explode. It's far more likely for an expired tire to explode. They should focus on commercial vehicles and not on private vehicles. |

EgunMogaji:with the shatload of tyres from China and no proper quality control that filled Nigerian market? You really have no idea why some people go for tokunbo tyres do you? Buy Chinese brandnew tyres then you will know you driving on nothing but risks. You think expired tired killed that minister? Over speeding did. |

The kind of cross sectional laws Nigeria makes can be amazing sometimes. The debate on date of expiration of tires is still ongoing even among manufacturers. Michelin, Bridgestone and continental tire manufacturers tell you their tires expire after ten years. Some safety groups say six years but its still a suggestion. Nigerian Government now tells you its 4 years, where did they do their research? or do they believe every bodies uses GT tires or all other cheap chinese products? Usage of tires is also a factor. If i buy tires and put 10,000km on it annually, and my friend does the same but only puts 2000km on them, how can both of us change tires at the same time after 4 years? Besides some chinese products will not even give you this four years of active service they are talking about. 4 Likes |

You guys claiming to be saints on this thread should keep shut. It's for your own good its for your own good... Where is your tyre manufacturing company in Nigeria? Because of increase in demand for tyre aba guys will swing into action (u know what I mean).... again, if truly u drive, u would know that tyres are not our problem but bucket holes we call potholes. No more Dunlop or Michelin... they've all left. All u have is double king and transking (mind u they are chinko made). Car owners are not blind and u can't value my life more that I. I know when I need to change my tyre and what brand to get. For instance I got my car some 7 months ago with valid tyres and they are still telling me to change them because they are unknown tyres... they better tell us they have patnered with tyre importers and returns from them is the "surest". well, there was a country 4 Likes |

3 of my tires are expired but I can assure you that they still look very good and the threads are still fully intact. I bought one of them last year. As it is now,I don't have the money to start changing 3 tires. Not now that things are so expensive. FRSC should please give Nigerians at least 6 months deadline. You can't just wake up one morning and say people should start changing their tires. The idea is good but it is so sudden and coming at a bad time. Things are so hard now, |

okandejihamed: True talk. I support you. Three of my tires are expired but still look very new. I bought one of them last year. Now is not a good time for me to start changing 3 tires. Man nova see food chop na to begin buy tires. |

Hm THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A 4 YEAR TYRE EXPIRY DATE, it's just another piece of nonsense made up by the idiots who are supposed to keep us safe, you don't believe me, fine lets go to the source http://www.michelin.co.uk/tyres/learn-share/buying-guide/when-should-i-change-my-tyres http://www.continental-tires.com/car/technology/tire-knowledge/lex-1-2 http://www.moderntiredealer.com/article/312312/final-words-on-tire-aging But Nigeria is hot you say, hotter than texas, hotter than Dubai. If the people who make the tires and thus have a vested interest in us buying as many as possible don't think or claim that tires expire after 4 years then why should I listen to a primary 6 dropout in a FRSC uniform Bottom line, use common sense, inspect your tires on a regular basis this applies to both new and old tires, once they show signs of aging, cracks etc change them 1 Like |

2014 avensis can only suffer tyre change in 2018 at the earliest, nothing to worry about. 2013 pajero will not be needing tyre changes before 2017. I am covered for now. QED. |

If your tires are expired and u don't have money to change them yet, then try and fix the reverse side of it,so they can't see the expiry date . |

MetaHuman: 1) I'm not sure what point you're trying to make with this one. 2) you're right, I don't know what makes people do what they do. 3) I've used Kuhmo tires (Korea), Nakang tired (Taiwan) and none of them exploded. Nigerians always look to pass the blame onto others. With our lackluster maintenance culture I'm sure no one is thinking about tire care. 4) Actually, it's trauma that killed the minister. Even before the report came out I already gave my opinion that the culpable tire which is unidirectional was mounted wrongly on the vehicle. FRSC vindicated me when they finished their report. Nigerians are the only group of people that does the same thing and expects a different result. |
