BUILDING COLLAPSES: OGUN STATE SHOPPING MALL VS THE SCOAN

This morning, a four-storey building said to be part of an ultra-modern shopping plaza being built by Ogun State Government tragically collapsed.

In a statement released by Mr. Adedayo Adeneye,
the Commissioner for Information & Strategy, for the state, the building was still under construction when it caved in.

The Governor equally stated that integrity tests will be conducted on the other part of the building to determine its stability.

This is another in a recent series of building collapses, the most controversial being The SCOAN building incident of September 12th, 2014.

The pattern of the Ogun government building collapse is akin to several recent building collapses which featured in the media, including:
The Lekki Gardens Structure on March 8th 2016.
The Kenya residential building on April 29th 2016
Jos school building collapse - September 2014

It is however strikingly distinct from the infamous Synagogue Church building incident.

Unlike the Synagogue building incident, the buildings mentioned did not symmetrically fall in a matter of seconds; rather, the buildings fell on one side. This created space for more to escape from the rubble. This explains the death toll figures not being as shocking as the Synagogue building which tragically claimed 116 lives.

Secondly, many of the items within the said buildings remained undamaged due to the manner of the fall. This led to many furniture items, bags, etc. being salvaged.

Finally, parts of the structure of the buildings remained intact or just partly damaged.

Lekki Gardens Building Collapse

However, the Synagogue building incident turned everything to dust literally. There was no chance to salvage items as the building symmetrically fell in less than four seconds as CCTV footage released by the church immediately after the incident shows. This footage has since been the centre of much public debate as the Lagos Coroner court insists that structural failure led to the collapse. The SCOAN lawyers believe that it was a detonated attack or controlled demolition that brought the building down.

One thing is clear, the difference between the manner in which the buildings fell is unmistakable.

The SCOAN maintains its stand of innocence having released footage on YouTube showing the difference between structural failures and controlled demolitions worldwide.

This video compares the difference between the Ogun state collapse and The SCOAN building.
