LIKE ISRAELITES, LIKE NIGERIANS: NEVER
PATIENT OR SATISFIED WITH ANYTHING
If there is any iota of resemblance between
Nigerians and Israelites (of old), it is in the
insatiable and violent disposition of both people
even when they had the best of leaders. Prior to
the coming of Moses, the Israelites had suffered
a great deal under the tyrannical rule of the
Pharaoh. They were treated as second class
citizens and were used as slaves on the farms
and maids in the house. They prayed to Allah to
grant them succor and Allah gave them Moses.
No sooner had Moses assumed leadership that
they started to complain saying:

"They said, "(O Moses)! We were tortured before
your advent and even after you had come. He
said (to them) soon Allah shall destroy your
enemies and give you successive authority on
the land to see how you will behave."
Moses defeated the Pharaoh and took the
Children of Israel out of Egypt towards the
promised land. Unfortunately, immediately they
crossed the red sea, they began to exhibit their
heretical traits. First, they lost faith in Allah and
decided to go back to disobedience.
"And We brought the Children of Israel across
the sea, and they came unto a people who were
given up to idols which they had. They said: O
Moses! Make for us a god even as they have
gods. He said: Lo! ye are a folk who know
not." (Q. 7:138)
Eventually, they defied Moses' orders and went
ahead to worship a gold calf, ignoring the advice
of Moses' deputy, Haroon who was together with
them to guide them.
"Indeed, Musa came to you with clear signs but
you took to the worship of the gold calf behind
his back and you were wrongdoers."
Then came the issue of diversification of source
of food. Initially, the people ate from just a
particular type of food and all of a sudden, they
developed an insatiable appetite for many food,
and told Moses that they wanted more.
Then they told him to show them Allah or else
they will disbelieve in his message completely.
A quick comparison between the Nigeria and
Israeli situations reveals the following :
i. Both countries had great, focused and
determined leaders in both Moses/Aron; Buhari/
Osinbajo;
ii. Both leaders came after a destructive
government (Pharaoh/Jonathan);
iii. Tough decisions had to be taken (e.g. Moses
was away for 40 nights/subsidy removal);
iv. The people dared God & took to Idol
worshipping;
v. They grew impatient and in fact wished that
Moses hadn't come/some Nigerians wishing that
Jonathan had continued
Open your Bible to the book of Numbers 14:1-3:
Now read:
"Then all the congregation lifted up their voices
and cried, and the people wept that night. 2. All
the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and
Aaron; and the whole congregation said to them,
"Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or
would that we had died in this wilderness! 3.
"Why is the LORD bringing us into this land, to
fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones
will become plunder; would it not be better for us
to return to Egypt?"…
May Allah protect us from heresy and
impatience. Let us pray for Muhammadu Buhari.
Desperate times require desperate measures.
May we all live to enjoy the fruit of our sacrifice.
