Sadly, Brazil's Kaka is out of the Copa America with a muscle injury and will be replaced by Paulo Henrique Ganso. The former AC Milan and Real Madrid midfielder, who now plays for Orlando City in Major League Soccer, was a late replacement for Douglas Costa. Kaka, 34, is the fifth player to withdraw from the squad and is expected to be out for about three weeks. The 100th anniversary Copa America starts in the United States on Friday, with Brazil's first game on Saturday. Their campaign begins against Ecuador, before they face Haiti on 9 June and then Peru on 13 June.

What are the chances of Team USA at this here's COPA America? OK, so these are the facts: 1. The United States men's national team shares Group A of the Copa America Centenario, which kicks off on Friday, with Colombia, Costa Rica and Paraguay. 2. Colombia and Costa Rica reached the quarterfinals of the 2014 World Cup, the best-ever performance for either country. Both are ranked higher than the 29th-placed U.S. by FIFA – fourth and 25th, respectively. Paraguay reached the semifinals of the last two Copa Americas, in 2011 and 2015. 3. After a round robin, only two teams will advance to the quarterfinals. 4. If the Americans don't win their group but place second, they likely will face Brazil in the next round. 5. U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has set reaching the semifinals as the objective. It's a coach's job, of course, to set ambitious and aggressive targets for his team. Especially when that coach is the richly remunerated Klinsmann, who was supposed to be transformative to the U.S. program but, in almost five years, has delivered very little on all the big promises. Looking at the above facts, however, the magnitude of the task towering over the Americans dawns. In three super difficult games, the Yanks will likely need a win and a draw to stand a chance of advancing. They may need more. Thus, setting aside for a moment Klinsmann's standardized bullishness, what can we reasonably expect from the United States at this one-off tournament, the biggest men's soccer event to come stateside since the 1994 World Cup? Heading into the draw back in February, surviving the group stage seemed to be the minimum required performance. But then the Americans drew arguably the toughest group – B consists of Brazil, Ecuador, Haiti and Peru; C of Mexico, Uruguay, Jamaica and Venezuela; D of Argentina, Chile, Panama and Bolivia. And so the question became if they'd survive at all. Next, consider that Group A crosses over with Group B in the quarterfinals. And while Brazil is in a bad way at the moment, it's still a better team than Ecuador, Haiti and Peru. So even if the Americans advance in second place, somehow, they could well face the five-time World Cup winners. Who spanked the Americans 4-1 in a friendly back in September. And by the same score the last time they met before that in 2012. Now for some good news: After stumbling around aimlessly since the 2014 World Cup, when the U.S. also overcome a deathly group to advance to the round of 16, Klinsmann's side has finally looked better of late. In three pre-Copa friendlies, Puerto Rico, Ecuador and Bolivia were all beaten. Certainly, the former and the latter are weak teams and Ecuador looked like a cheap imitation of itself. But wins are wins and tend to beget more wins. And some pieces started to fall into place. The defense finally looks settled. DeAndre Yedlin and Fabian Johnson will likely flank Geoff Cameron and John Brooks. That's never really happened before in a Klinsmann era in which the apparent randomness of his lineups has seemingly been the only constant. In midfield, there is suddenly an abundance of options, with Michael Bradley, Jermaine Jones, Alejandro Bedoya and Darlington Nagbe all in good form, while 17-year-old prodigy Christian Pulisic is knocking on the door. Up front, Clint Dempsey, Bobby Wood and Gyasi Zardes may yet figure out how to absorb the loss of Jozy Altidore to injury. But against Colombia on Friday in Santa Clara, Calif., the fearsome attacking trio of James Rodriguez, Juan Cuadrado and Carlos Bacca awaits. Against Costa Rica in Chicago next Tuesday, the attacking flair of Joel Campbell and Bryan Ruiz will likely compensate for injured goalkeeper-cum-talisman Keylor Navas, whose loss after a splendid Real Madrid season will nevertheless be felt. And in Philadelphia on June 11, a disciplined, tough and effective Paraguayan side promises another arduous affair. Getting through that group would constitute an enormous achievement. And while recent results – the U.S. is 6-1-0 in 2016 – have buoyed a deflated fan base somewhat, the odds still seem stacked against the Americans advancing, if ever so slightly. Should they manage and somehow avoid Brazil, though – making Ecuador the likely opponent, whom they beat 1-0 on May 25 on Nagbe's 90th-minute goal – things begin to look a lot brighter. If the U.S. can win a knockout game and get that monkey off its back, so much the better. But performance should count for something as well. A largely overlooked aspect of the Americans' run to the last 16 in Brazil – wherein they were bounced by Belgium in extra time – is that they were badly outplayed in three of their four games. They only matched Portugal in the run of play. The Copa America Centenario is an important and prestigious event in its own right, but it will also serve as a benchmark for the U.S. looking ahead to the next World Cup in Russia in 2018. All of which suggests that there are two acceptable outcomes. The first is survival of the group stage – any further progress from there is a bonus. Failing that, the Americans should at the very least show significant progress, demonstrating that they're finally getting better and that they could break out in Russia. Short of that, this Copa will be an outright failure for the U.S. And hard questions should be asked about the future. Leander Schaerlaeckens is a soccer columnist for Yahoo Sports. Mexico fans share their views on Donald Trump prior to Copa America warm-up match A handful of El Tri fans were pretending to hit, hang or stab piñatas depicting the U.S. presidential candidate ahead of a friendly against Chile in San Diego. It's safe to say Donald Trump doesn't have the support of these Mexico national team fans. Ahead of El Tri's Copa America warm-up friendly against Chile, several people in the parking lot of San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium showed their displeasure for the U.S. presidential hopeful by carrying piñatas depicting Trump, with some pretending to hit, hang or stab the world-famous businessman.. |

Copa America 2016: Three Reasons Why USA Soccer Has No Chance Of Winning Argentina is the oddsmakers’ favorite to win Copa America 2016 in the United States. Brazil, Chile, Uruguay and Mexico also are confident of succeeding at the 24-day tournament, which kicks off Friday in Santa Clara, Calif. So can the United States upset the odds and win Coppola America 2016? We say a resounding “no.” Ever-optimistic United States head coach Jurgen Klinsmann targets players’ “growth” and a place in the semifinals as his team’s objectives at Copa America 2016. We’ll examine Team USA’s chances of hitting that mark later this week, but this piece is about its chances of winning Copa America 2016 on home soil. Top players win biggest prizes The United States players are all capable and dedicated professionals but they’ll compete against the likes of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, James Rodriguez, Sergio Aguero and Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez. These superstars and stars play at club soccer’s highest level and earn the biggest salaries for doing so. Many of the their teammates ply their trades at clubs just a wrung or two lower on the international ladder. Even Mexico’s brigade of European-based players surpasses the United States’. Not one of the U.S. players play for clubs in the UEFA Champions League — world soccer’s elite club competition — let alone one capable of winning it. Messi, Suarez and Rodriguez have done seven times combined. Christian Pulisic is the only player on Team USA’s 23-man roster who is likely to reach that level in the next few years. He’s only 17, and there’s no telling how many minutes he’ll play at Copa America 2016. Lacks of both quality and experience at the highest level has cost Team USA at World Cups, Gold Cups and previous Copa America appearances. That won’t change this year. Format League soccer differs from tournament soccer in that players’ and teams’ technical and tactical qualities earn the best results over time. Physical prowess and mental fortitude will be at a premium in this condensed tournament. Team USA played three warm-up games against weaker opposition than it is likely to face at Copa America 2016. The results and performances demonstrated that the United States’ technical and tactical elements are firmly in place, but nothing we’ve seen in recent weeks or years suggest this team can physically or psychologically overpower top opposition. Work in-progress There’s nothing special about these United States players or coaches, relative to top competition. Our skepticism isn’t a significant enough cause around which Team USA can rally and inspire itself unprecedented success, and we haven’t identified any others as the countdown clock to kickoff nears zero. Team USA is on the rise but not necessarily on the march. Rather than winning Copa America 2016, we expect an improving Team USA to use the tournament as a staging ground for smooth qualification to the 2018 FIFA World Cup and perhaps a surprisingly successful tournament in Russia in two years’ time. |
