A mother turned detective to expose relationship between a Geography teacher and her 16-year-old son.

Lauren Cox, 27, screamed and said ‘I’m sorry’ after she was jailed for 12 months for five counts of sex with a child in her charge.

The mother of the teen was praised by the judge for uncovering the relationship.

But as Cox was led from Croydon Crown Court the schoolboy’s mother told Cox’s mother: ‘I didn’t have a choice, he is my son.’

Cox’s mother replied: ‘You did have a choice. How do you sleep at night?’

The teacher, who worked at a school in south London, met the pupil when he was 13 and would give him sweets, a court heard.

Brian Reece, prosecuting, said in February last year Cox gave the boy a lift.

He said: ‘They could either sit in silence, she could simply drop him at the station – or they could hug.

‘He chose the third. This was the first step into what she knew was forbidden territory.’

Cox went on the pill, telling him it would ‘feel better’.

She also sent him explicit selfie videos and told him to keep the relationship a secret.

The boy, from Oxted in Surrey, had invented teenage girlfriends to fool his parents.

Suspicious, the mother spied on her son and watched Cox pick him up in her car at the family home.

In a showdown with the mother last August, the teacher claimed she was giving ‘extra tuition’ before agreeing to end the affair and resign.

In a victim statement, the boy, who is unnamed for legal reasons, said he ‘felt trapped’ and distanced himself from his friends and family.

Judge Adam Huddleston told Cox: ‘You have not just been a shame and disgrace to yourself, you have brought teaching into disrepute.’

Cox has been jailed for 12 months and barred from teaching.

She is getting a divorce from husband Andrew, 30.
