President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the disengagement of Mr. John Kennedy Opara as the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission (NCPC).
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal said Friday in a statement that the decision was with effect from Thursday, May 19, 2016.

While no reason was given for his removal by the SGF, government officials told Daily Trust on Sunday that the recent controversy surrounding the Presidency of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) was responsible for Opara’s sack.

“President Muhammadu Buhari, has in the exercise of his powers, approved the disengagement of Mr. John Kennedy Opara as the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission with effect from Thursday May 19 2016. Mr. President, however, thanked him for his invaluable services to the nation and wishes him well in his future endeavours,” Lawal said.

Opara was reappointed by the former president, Goodluck Jonathan, in July 2013, for a second tenure of five years in accordance with the NCPC Establishment Act of 2007.

He was accused of involvement in the controversy where some Christian elders accused President Muhammadu Buhari of interference in the selection of a new CAN President when the tenure of the incumbent Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor ends in July.

When asked if Opara was sacked for his alleged role during the 2015 Presidential election supporting the immediate past President Goodluck Jonathan, one of the officials said there was no connection between the sack and the election, saying the president would have sacked him long ago if it was because of the election.
He insisted that it was after a committee found him wanting on the CAN presidency controversy and other issues that he was sacked.

The National Director of the Christ Redeemers Union (CRU) Dr. Ebenezer Olusola Abednego had accused the Presidency of showing an unusual interest in the election of a successor to Oritsejafor. The accusation was however denied by President Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesman Mr. Femi Adesina.
